Chapter 3: What Daniel Tried To Take
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I thought I had misunderstood.
Emma’s trust?
I lowered her carefully to the floor.
“Claire, what are you talking about?””
Daniel moved immediately.
“It wasn’t what it looks like.””
That sentence told me everything.
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
“Sarah, listen.””
“How much?””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””
My stomach dropped.
Linda gasped.
Melissa whispered, “Oh my God.””
I stared at my husband.
“Our daughter is four.””
“I wasn’t stealing from Emma.””
“Then explain why you tried to take a quarter of a million dollars from her.””
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“It was temporary.””
“For what?””
Silence.
“Daniel.””
“My business had a problem.””
“What problem?””
“A cash-flow problem.””
Claire interrupted.
“That is not what the transfer request stated.””
Daniel glared at her.
“This is between my wife and me.””
“No,” Claire said.
“You attempted to access a protected account belonging to a minor. That makes it considerably larger than a marital disagreement.””
Linda stepped forward.
“Daniel would never steal from his daughter.””
Claire’s gaze moved to her.
“I didn’t use the word steal.””
Linda faltered.
I did.
“He tried to steal from Emma.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Stop saying that.””
“Why? Because it sounds ugly?””
“I was going to put it back.””
“With what money?””
“I had a deal coming.””
“What deal?””
His silence returned.
Then Melissa looked away.
That tiny movement caught my attention.
“Melissa?””
She stiffened.
“What?””
“You know.””
“No, I don’t.””
“Yes, you do.””
Linda stepped between us.
“Leave her out of this.””
I looked directly at Melissa.
“What deal?””
She gripped her wineglass so tightly I thought the stem might snap.
Daniel spoke first.
“Sarah, we should discuss this privately.””
“No more private conversations.””
“Please.””
“No.””
His expression changed.
The softness vanished.
“You don’t understand what’s at stake.””
“Then explain it.””
“My company could collapse.””
“And?””
“And forty-three people could lose their jobs.””
That hit me.
Daniel knew it would.
He knew I would picture families.
Mortgages.
Children.
People waking up unemployed because I refused to help.
For years, that was how he won arguments.
He made my boundaries sound selfish.
Claire must have seen it too.
“Sarah,” she said quietly, “the requested destination account was not associated with Daniel’s company.””
Daniel snapped his head toward her.
My blood turned cold.
“Where was it going?””
Claire checked the document.
“An LLC.””
“What LLC?””
“Lake North Properties.””
Linda dropped her wineglass.
It shattered across the hardwood floor.
Everyone looked at her.
I stared at the broken glass.
Then at Linda.
“You know that name.””
“No.””
“Yes, you do.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Enough.””
I almost laughed again.
Now he could stand up.
Now he could raise his voice.
Now that the person being protected was his mother.
Claire closed her briefcase.
“Sarah, your father is fifteen minutes away. I suggest you and Emma wait in my vehicle.””
But I couldn’t leave yet.
Not without knowing.
“Daniel, what is Lake North Properties?””
He looked at his mother.
That was his mistake.
I followed his eyes.
Linda’s face had gone gray.
“Tell me.””
Daniel whispered, “It owns this house.””
The words didn’t make sense at first.
I looked around.
The massive foyer.
The curved staircase.
The chandelier.
The dining room decorated with expensive garlands.
“This house?””
Linda found her voice.
“It was an investment arrangement.””
“With my daughter’s money?””
“No!”” Daniel said quickly.
“The transfer never happened.””
“Because Claire stopped it.””
He said nothing.
I turned toward Linda.
“How much do you owe?””
Her chin lifted.
“That is none of your business.””
“You tried to make it my four-year-old daughter’s business.””
Linda’s eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for Daniel.””
“There it is again.””
“What?””
“Daniel.””
My voice shook.
“Everything is always Daniel. What Daniel needs. What Daniel deserves. What Daniel owes you.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
“She was going to lose the house.””
“And you decided Emma should save it?””
“I was desperate.””
“You could have told me.””
“You would have said no.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stared at him.
“You’re right.””
His face collapsed.
“I would have said no.””
Linda pointed toward the door.
“Then leave. Take your precious money and leave.””
I looked at her.
She was still trying to sound powerful.
But now I saw something beneath it.
Fear.
Claire touched my arm gently.
“Sarah.””
I nodded.
I was done.
Emma took my hand.
We walked onto the porch.
Behind us, Daniel called my name.
I didn’t stop.
Then Linda shouted something that did.
“Tell her, Daniel!””
Silence.
I turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His mother was behind him.
“Tell me what?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Mom, don’t.””
Linda’s voice trembled with rage.
“You think Sarah’s father discovered everything?””
My pulse quickened.
“Everything about what?””
Daniel looked sick.
Linda laughed bitterly.
“Ask your husband where the first hundred thousand dollars went.””
I stared at him.
“What first hundred thousand?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.
“Sarah, she’s angry. Don’t listen to her.””
Linda stepped onto the porch.
“No. She wants the truth? Give it to her.””
Daniel grabbed his mother’s arm.
“Stop.””
She ripped free.
Then she looked directly at me.
“That business of his didn’t suddenly get into trouble.””
Snow drifted between us.
Linda pointed at her son.
“He’s been moving money for almost a year.””
My throat tightened.
“Where?””
Daniel whispered, “Mom.””
Linda ignored him.
“To a woman.””
Everything inside me went cold.
I looked at my husband.
“What woman?””
Before he could answer, Claire’s phone rang.
She checked the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Sarah.””
“What?””
“It’s your father.””
She answered, listened for several seconds, then slowly looked at Daniel.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Claire lowered the phone.
“Your father just opened the documents from Daniel’s company.””
Daniel backed into the doorway.
Claire’s next words erased whatever remained of my marriage.
“The woman isn’t the worst part.””
I could barely breathe.
“What could possibly be worse?””
May you like
Claire stared at Daniel.
“Her name appears on Emma’s original trust paperwork.””
