Chapter 15: The Girl Who Chose Her Own Name

I spent ten years believing I was forgotten.

I wasn’t.

I was watched.

Every step.

Every street.

Every night I slept outside.

Someone knew where I was.

Someone was waiting.

The underground facility beneath the Whitmore mansion was not abandoned.

It was alive.

Machines hummed.

Screens flickered.

And on every screen was my face.

A younger version.

A child.

A survivor.

Adrian stood beside me, completely silent.

Marco lowered his weapon.

“Now you understand.””

Adrian looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“I understand that you betrayed me.””

Marco looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By helping them?””

“By stopping something worse.””

I stepped forward.

“What am I?””

Everyone became quiet.

Marco looked at me.

“The final Phoenix subject.””

“No.””

Adrian immediately answered.

“She’s a person.””

Marco looked at him sadly.

“That’s why you failed.””

Adrian moved toward him.

“You think this makes you different from Richard?””

Marco didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

The truth hurt.

The facility contained everything.

Experiments.

Documents.

Recordings.

Proof of what they had done.

Dr. Cross analyzed the system remotely.

Then she found something.

“Wren.””

I looked at the screen.

“What?””

“There’s a final memory file.””

“Where?””

She pointed.

“Inside the system.””

Adrian frowned.

“How?””

Dr. Cross looked confused.

“It was activated when she entered.””

I stepped closer.

A file appeared.

*CHARLOTTE WHITMORE: FINAL DECISION*

My hands shook.

“What is that?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your choice.””

I opened it.

The screen showed my father.

The final message.

“Charlotte.””

His voice was calm.

“If you’re watching this, you have learned the truth.””

He paused.

“You were never created to become a weapon.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You were created because we needed someone who could remember.””

The video continued.

“Richard believes control is the future.””

A faint smile.

“But he forgot one thing.””

“People choose.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“You will have the ability to activate Phoenix.””

The room went silent.

“Or destroy it.””

The screen showed two options.

ACTIVATE.

DELETE.

My breathing stopped.

Adrian looked at me.

“The choice is yours.””

For the first time in my life…

It really was.

No one controlling me.

No one hiding the truth.

No one deciding my future.

I looked at the machine.

All the pain.

All the stolen years.

All the people who suffered because of this.

Then I looked at Adrian.

“You saved me.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I smiled sadly.

“You were the first person who saw me as Wren.””

His eyes softened.

Not Charlotte.

Not a project.

Not an inheritance.

Me.

I pressed DELETE.

The system alarm began.

Lights flashed.

Files disappeared.

Screens went black.

Marco stared.

“You have no idea what you destroyed.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Everything that hurt people.””

The facility began collapsing.

Adrian grabbed my hand.

“Time to go.””

We ran.

Behind us, ten years of secrets disappeared into darkness.

Months later, the world learned the truth.

Project Phoenix was exposed.

The Kane empire collapsed.

Vincent Kane was arrested.

Marco disappeared before he could face trial.

Richard Kane’s final fate remained unknown.

Some people said he escaped.

Others said he died beneath the mansion.

I never found out.

And I stopped searching.

Because I finally understood something.

A stolen past does not decide your future.

I never became Charlotte Whitmore again.

I kept the name I chose.

Wren.

The girl who survived.

The girl who remembered.

The girl who walked out of the fire.

Years later, I returned to the place where everything started.

The Whitmore mansion had been rebuilt.

Not as a monument.

As a home.

Adrian stood beside me.

“You still think I’m dangerous?””

I smiled.

“Sometimes.””

He laughed quietly.

“And yet you’re still here.””

I looked at him.

“Because I know the difference now.””

“Between what?””

I watched the sunrise over the city.

“Between someone who wants to control your life…”

A pause.

“And someone who gives it back.””

Adrian reached for my hand.

And this time—

I didn’t disappear.

I didn’t run.

I didn’t hide.

For the first time in ten years, I knew exactly who I was.

Not a lost heiress.

Not a forgotten experiment.

Not a secret.

May you like

Just Wren.

And that was the one thing nobody could ever take from me again.
