Chapter 1

The family stopped laughing when Mark carried Rosie into the dining room.
His four-year-old daughter had visible bruises and was too frightened to lift her face from his chest.
Bethany admitted she had hurt the child but dismissed it as a joke.
Rosie merely needed to be “toughened up,” she claimed.
Mark refused to let anyone minimize what happened.
He took his daughter and headed for the door.
Then his mother called him a traitor for choosing Rosie over the family.
“She is my family,” Mark replied. “You are not.”
His father responded by throwing a glass toward them.
Mark shielded his little girl with his own body.
In that moment, every relative revealed whose side they had chosen.
