Chapter 6: The Person Who Tried To Save Her

The next morning, I drove Zoria and Kendra to the university office.

Nobody spoke much during the ride.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was heavy.

The kind of silence that comes after a family discovers something it can never forget.

Zoria sat in the passenger seat holding her scholarship folder.

She kept looking at it.

Like she was afraid it would disappear again.

“You don’t have to be scared,” I told her.

She looked out the window.

“I was so close to giving up.””

Those words stayed with me.

“How close?””

She swallowed.

“I deleted my acceptance email.””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Why?””

“Because Mom told me I was being selfish.””

I felt anger rise.

But I pushed it down.

This wasn’t about anger.

It was about my daughter.

“You’re not selfish for wanting your future.””

She nodded.

“I know that now.””

When we arrived, Richard Hale was waiting.

He brought us into a private office.

On the table were printed records.

“We identified the person connected to the warning email.””

My heart jumped.

“Who?””

Richard slid a paper forward.

“Victor Lane.””

Marianne’s past had finally stepped into the room.

Kendra looked at me.

“Who is he?””

I didn’t know.

But I knew one thing.

Marianne did.

Richard continued.

“He was listed as an emergency contact on an old financial record connected to your family.””

I looked at the document.

The date was twelve years earlier.

Before I married Marianne.

Before Kendra moved into my home.

Before I knew anything about the life she had before me.

“Can we contact him?”” I asked.

Richard nodded.

“He already contacted us.””

That surprised me.

“Why?””

Richard looked at Zoria.

“Because he believes your daughter was being targeted.””

Zoria frowned.

“Targeted?””

Richard opened another file.

“This was sent to us anonymously.””

Inside was a report.

A report about scholarship fraud.

And at the top was a handwritten note.

“Check Marianne Carter’s previous history.””

My stomach tightened.

“What history?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Financial complaints.””

Marianne’s secrets were growing.

And every one of them led back to the same question.

How much had she hidden from us?

Later that afternoon, I returned home alone.

Marianne was sitting in the living room.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

“I know about Victor,” I said.

Her eyes closed.

“I figured you would.””

“Who is he?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, she whispered:

“He’s my brother.””

I stared.

“Your brother?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say he should have stayed gone?””

She looked down.

“Because he knows what I did before I met you.””

The room felt colder.

“What did you do?””

Marianne rubbed her hands together.

“I made choices when I was younger.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“I had debts.””

I waited.

“And Victor helped me cover them.””

“How?””

Her silence returned.

“Marianne.””

She looked away.

“I used someone else’s information.””

My heart sank.

“Whose?””

She didn’t respond.

But I already knew.

The pattern.

The documents.

The signatures.

The lies.

This wasn’t the first time.

“You did this before.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I changed one thing. Years ago.””

“One thing?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

I stepped back.

“Fixing things is what you call destroying people’s choices.””

She cried.

“I was afraid.””

“No. You were willing.””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Victor Lane.””

I looked at Marianne.

She covered her face.

“I need to tell you the truth about your wife.””

I said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Marianne didn’t target Zoria because of Kendra.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why?””

There was a long pause.

Then Victor said:

“Because Zoria discovered something she was never supposed to find.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Where my daughter’s room was.

“What did she find?””

May you like

Victor’s voice dropped.

“She found the evidence that could send your wife to prison.””
