Chapter 3: The Man in My House

I called the police before Vanessa could say another word.

“There’s an unauthorized person inside my house,” I told the dispatcher.

“I’m watching him on my security cameras right now.””

Vanessa rushed toward me.

“Daniel, don’t!””

I turned away.

The dispatcher asked whether the man was armed.

“I don’t know.””

On my screen, Greg disappeared down the hallway toward my office.

My safe.

“Officers are being dispatched,” the woman said.

“Thank you.””

I ended the call.

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

“You need to call them back.””

“Why?””

“Because this is a misunderstanding.””

“Then Greg can explain it to the police.””

“You’ll ruin his life.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what you’re worried about?””

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Martin was already photographing every page in the folder.

“Martin,” Vanessa snapped, “stop.””

“No.””

“You work for my family.””

“I represented your parents on estate matters. That does not mean I’m required to hide evidence.””

Linda covered her mouth.

“Evidence?””

Martin looked at her.

“Linda, you should probably call your husband.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Give me those papers.””

Martin moved them behind his back.

“No.””

Vanessa reached again.

I blocked her.

“Enough.””

She glared at me.

“This is our wedding day.””

“No. It was our wedding day.””

Outside the suite, I could hear guests murmuring.

Someone had clearly told them something was wrong.

The wedding coordinator appeared at the doorway.

“Daniel, the officiant wants to know if we should delay—”

“There’s no delay.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Daniel.””

I looked directly at the coordinator.

“The wedding is canceled.””

A collective gasp came from the hallway.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can’t do this.””

“I just did.””

“You’re throwing away three years!””

“No. I’m protecting my daughter from the woman who hit her.””

Vanessa’s expression twisted.

“She’s manipulating you!””

Sophie flinched.

I stepped closer to Vanessa.

“Say one more cruel thing about her.””

Vanessa looked at my face and stopped.

Then my phone vibrated again.

MOTION DETECTED — OFFICE.

I opened the camera.

Greg was kneeling beside my safe.

He had something in his hand.

A small electronic device connected by a cable.

Martin leaned over my shoulder.

“What is he doing?””

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa did.

I saw it immediately.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“What is that device?””

“I don’t know.””

“You looked at it before I even finished asking.””

“I said I don’t know.””

Sophie tugged my jacket.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“He had that before.””

“When?””

“When Vanessa opened the black box.””

Vanessa exploded.

“STOP LISTENING TO HER!””

Sophie recoiled.

I moved so fast Vanessa stumbled backward.

“You do not raise your voice at my child again.””

“She doesn’t understand what she saw!””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

I held up my phone.

“Explain why your friend is breaking into my safe while you’re standing here in a wedding dress.””

Vanessa’s eyes darted around the room.

Her mother.

Martin.

The bridesmaids.

The coordinator.

Me.

Too many witnesses.

She lowered her voice.

“Greg was retrieving something for me.””

“From my safe?””

“Something that belongs to me.””

“Nothing in that safe belongs to you.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You don’t know that.””

That sentence landed strangely.

Martin heard it too.

“What does that mean?”” he asked.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Nothing.””

My phone rang.

Unknown local number.

I answered.

“Daniel Harris?””

“Yes.””

“This is Officer Ramirez. We’re at your residence. We have one male detained inside.””

I exhaled.

“Thank God.””

“We found him in an upstairs office.””

“That’s where my safe is.””

There was a pause.

“Mr. Harris, the safe is open.””

My stomach dropped.

“What was taken?””

“We’re still determining that. The individual had a duffel bag containing documents, two external drives, cash, and several pieces of jewelry.””

Rachel’s jewelry.

I closed my eyes.

Her wedding ring was in that safe.

I had kept it for Sophie.

“Do not let him leave.””

“He isn’t going anywhere.””

Then Officer Ramirez’s tone changed.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“He claims he had permission to enter.””

“From whom?””

“He showed us text messages.””

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“Whose messages?””

“A contact saved as Vanessa.””

Every face in the room turned toward her.

Vanessa backed away.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

“Did you send Greg to my house?””

“No.””

“Police have your messages.””

“You don’t know what they say.””

“Then tell me.””

Her breathing quickened.

“I needed something from the safe.””

“What?””

She shook her head.

“What did you need?””

“Daniel—”

“What?””

“The original trust documents.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Tears suddenly filled her eyes.

Not guilty tears.

Cornered tears.

“Because you were never supposed to see the amendment.””

Martin went still.

“What amendment?””

Vanessa realized too late what she had said.

I stepped toward her.

“What amendment?””

“I misspoke.””

“No, you didn’t.””

Martin grabbed the folder again and flipped through it.

“There’s no amendment here.””

“I know,” Vanessa whispered.

The police officer was still on the phone.

“Mr. Harris?””

“I’m here.””

“We also recovered a sealed envelope from the suspect’s bag.””

“Whose name is on it?””

Another pause.

“Your daughter’s.””

Sophie looked up at me.

My chest tightened.

“What does it say?””

“The outside says, ‘To be opened upon the death of Daniel Harris.’”

The room went completely silent.

Vanessa’s mother slowly sat down.

Martin stared at Vanessa.

I could hear Sophie breathing beside me.

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“Officer, secure everything. I’m coming there now.””

I ended the call.

Vanessa moved toward me.

“Daniel, wait.””

I picked Sophie up.

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

“We’re leaving.””

“Please.””

“You can explain everything to the police.””

Panic flashed across Vanessa’s face.

“No.””

That single word made me stop.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Pure fear.

Martin noticed it too.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “what is in that envelope?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing.””

I walked toward the door.

Then Linda suddenly spoke behind us.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

Vanessa’s mother was crying.

She held her phone in one trembling hand.

“I think there’s something you need to know before you go home.””

Vanessa spun around.

“Mom, don’t.””

Linda looked at her daughter.

“I should have told him months ago.””

“Mom!””

Linda ignored her.

She looked at me.

“Three months ago, Vanessa asked me a strange question.””

“What question?””

“She asked how quickly a guardian could gain control of a child’s trust if the surviving parent died unexpectedly.””

The air left my lungs.

Vanessa screamed.

“She’s twisting it!””

Linda shook her head.

“I asked why she wanted to know.””

“What did she say?”” I whispered.

Linda’s face crumpled.

“She said she was planning for every possible future.””

I tightened my hold on Sophie.

Vanessa rushed toward her mother.

“You promised you’d stay out of this!””

Martin stepped between them.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

My phone buzzed once more.

A text from Officer Ramirez.

We found another document hidden beneath the safe lining. You need to see this in person.

Attached was one photograph.

I opened it.

At first, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.

Then I saw my name.

My date of birth.

Sophie’s name.

Vanessa’s name.

And a handwritten date at the top.

Tomorrow.

At the bottom was a document title that made my hands turn ice cold.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP OF SOPHIE HARRIS.

But it was the handwritten note beside my name that terrified me.

Three words.

FATHER PRESUMED DECEASED.

I looked up at Vanessa.

She was already staring at the exit.

And before anyone could stop her, she ran.
