Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Screen

The sound from Emma’s tablet filled the principal’s office.

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Then everyone heard it.

A chair scraping.

A box hitting the floor.

And Mrs. Collins’ voice.

“Seriously, Noah? Do you always have to make everything harder?””

My entire body went still.

It was her.

Not a child’s imagination.

Not a misunderstanding.

Her voice.

Mrs. Collins stared at the tablet like it was a weapon pointed directly at her.

“Turn that off,” she said.

Emma’s mother held the tablet closer.

“No.””

The confidence in that single word changed the room.

Mrs. Collins looked at Principal Harris.

“This is inappropriate. A student recording inside a classroom is a serious violation.””

Emma’s mother stepped forward.

“What about a teacher hurting a child?””

Mrs. Collins opened her mouth, but no words came out.

I watched her carefully.

The same woman who had been smiling ten minutes earlier was suddenly searching for an escape.

Principal Harris reached for the tablet.

“Let me see this.””

Emma’s mother hesitated.

Then she handed it over.

The recording continued.

The camera angle was different from the classroom security camera. It was lower, shaky, and pointed toward a desk.

A pencil case.

A stack of notebooks.

The corner of Noah’s backpack.

A child’s voice whispered.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Collins.””

Noah.

My chest tightened.

Mrs. Collins’ voice came next.

“Sorry doesn’t fix careless behavior.””

“I didn’t mean to drop it.””

“You embarrassed me.””

The room became silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then came the sound of the ruler.

A sharp crack.

I closed my eyes.

I didn’t want to imagine my son standing there alone.

“Please stop,” Noah whispered in the recording.

Another crack.

Mrs. Collins’ voice became colder.

“And maybe next time you’ll think before making me look bad.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Principal Harris slowly lowered the tablet.

His face had changed.

The confidence he had shown earlier was gone.

Mrs. Collins immediately stood.

“This is edited.””

Emma’s mother looked shocked.

“Edited?””

“Yes. Anyone can manipulate audio.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“You’re saying a nine-year-old and a little girl planned an audio forgery?””

Mrs. Collins looked at me.

“You don’t understand children.””

I stepped closer.

“No. You don’t understand mine.””

For the first time, she looked away.

Principal Harris rubbed his forehead.

“Mrs. Collins, why was the camera disconnected?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mrs. Collins?””

“I don’t remember.””

“You don’t remember?””

She crossed her arms.

“I unplugged it because it was distracting.””

I stared at her.

“Before or after you took the ruler?””

Her silence answered for her.

Principal Harris stood.

“I need everyone to leave while I contact the district office.””

Mrs. Collins grabbed her bag.

“This is ridiculous.””

As she walked past me, she stopped.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she whispered:

“You have no idea what you’ve started.””

I looked at her.

“No. You don’t.””

But as she left the room, I noticed something.

Something that bothered me.

Emma’s recording proved what happened inside the classroom.

But it didn’t explain why Mrs. Collins had been so confident.

Why she was already sitting in the principal’s office before I arrived.

Why she seemed prepared.

Someone had warned her.

And I needed to know who.
