Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Messages

For the first time in weeks, my anger wasn’t directed at myself.

It was directed at someone else.

Someone had manipulated Rachel.

Someone had influenced Noah’s life.

And someone had been hiding behind a phone screen for years.

Daniel immediately called the number.

No answer.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Rachel looked terrified.

“What if they’re still watching?””

Daniel shook his head.

“They won’t get near Noah.””

I believed him.

Because Daniel had changed.

Before, he had trusted that love alone would protect his family.

Now he understood that protecting someone sometimes meant looking at painful truths.

The next day, we met with a phone company representative.

The messages had been sent from a prepaid number.

No registered name.

No easy answers.

But there was one detail.

The number had only been active during a specific period.

The months before Rachel disappeared.

Daniel stared at the information.

“Someone planned this.””

I felt sick.

Because this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t someone losing control.

Someone had deliberately pushed a mother away from her child.

When we got home, my mother called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Sarah.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

“You sound angry.””

“I have questions.””

Another pause.

“About what?””

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

I turned on speaker.

“Did you ever contact Rachel?””

Silence.

That silence answered before her words did.

“What?””

“Mom.””

Her breathing changed.

“Why would you ask me that?””

“Because someone sent her messages.””

My mother didn’t speak.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Linda, did you send messages telling Rachel to leave Noah?””

The silence became unbearable.

Then my mother said:

“I did what I thought was best.””

My entire body went cold.

“Mom?””

“I protected you.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You protected me?””

“Yes.””

“By destroying a child’s relationship with his mother?””

She sighed.

“Sarah, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

My mother’s voice hardened.

“She was unstable. She couldn’t take care of him.””

“So you decided you should?””

“I wanted you to have your own family.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same thinking.

The same belief.

That Noah was something standing in the way.

That loving him meant losing something else.

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You manipulated a child’s life because you wanted your daughter to have a perfect family.””

My mother became defensive.

“I was trying to help.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“You were trying to control.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“Sarah, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“There’s more.””

My stomach tightened.

“What more?””

She hesitated.

“I didn’t only convince Rachel to leave.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stood.

“What did you do?””

My mother’s voice became smaller.

“I told Daniel something about Noah.””

I looked at my husband.

“What?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother continued.

“Before you married Sarah, I told you Rachel had abandoned Noah because she didn’t want him.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“I never believed that.””

“But you remembered.””

I watched his expression shift.

Because I realized something.

Years ago, before I entered this family…

Someone had already planted the idea that Noah was unwanted.

My mother had been shaping the story long before I arrived.

Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.

“I’m sorry, Sarah.””

I felt numb.

“For what?””

“Because the reason you struggled to love Noah…”

A pause.

“Is because I taught you to see him as someone who took something away from you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because for years, I thought the worst part of me had come from inside.

But now I had to face another truth.

Someone had planted the seed.

But I was the one who let it grow.

And upstairs, Noah was calling my name.

“Mom?””

I turned.

He was standing on the stairs.

He had heard enough.

His face was pale.

And the first thing he asked was:

“Was everyone trying to get rid of me?””
