Chapter 4: The Man My Stepmother Was Hiding

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Then my father set his phone on the hallway table with such care that it frightened me more than if he'd thrown it.

“Madison,” he said, “repeat what you just told us.””

My stepsister wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“Daniel Brooks is the man Mom's been seeing.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse from the console.

“That's enough. This conversation is over.””

“No,” Dad said.

She froze.

Michael Bennett wasn't a man who raised his voice often. He believed problems could be solved with patience, reasonable questions, and the occasional firmly worded email. I'd watched him negotiate contracts with people twice his size without losing his temper.

But now his face had gone so still that I barely recognized him.

“Put the purse down, Vanessa.””

“I have nothing to explain to you while you're treating me like a criminal.””

“Then you shouldn't have any difficulty answering one question. Who is Daniel Brooks?””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the purse strap.

“He's a friend.””

Madison let out a bitter laugh.

“A friend? Really, Mom?””

Vanessa spun around.

“You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about!””

“Then why have you been meeting him every Thursday? Why did you tell me he was helping you with the vacation arrangements? And why did you make me promise not to tell Dad?””

“Madison!”” Vanessa shouted.

My father stepped between them.

“Do not shout at her to keep her quiet.””

Vanessa stared at him as if he'd betrayed her.

I stood beside the table, looking at the stained dress I'd spent six months earning. A few minutes earlier, I'd thought the worst thing Vanessa had done was try to slap me for demanding my property back.

Now there was an $8,400 necklace purchased in my name, a stranger receiving expensive gifts, and a marriage collapsing in front of me.

“Dad,” I said softly, “who is Daniel?””

He looked at me.

“I don't know yet, sweetheart.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“Of course you don't. Because you never listen to me! You're always working, always worrying about money, always making me feel like I have to beg for every little thing.””

Dad's expression tightened.

“Eight thousand four hundred dollars isn't a little thing.””

“It was my money, too!””

“Then why use Emily's name?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I pulled a chair away from the dining table and sat down before my knees could betray me.

“Did you use my information to buy that necklace?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Emily, this doesn't concern you.””

“My name is on the receipt. My signature is on that form. You charged Dad's credit card. How does it not concern me?””

“You're twisting everything.””

“Then explain it.””

She turned toward Dad again, apparently hoping he'd rescue her from my questions.

He didn't.

Instead, he picked up his phone and called the jewelry store.

Vanessa's face went pale.

“Michael, don't.””

He put the call on speaker.

A woman answered after two rings.

“Good afternoon, Bellamy Fine Jewelry. How may I help you?””

“My name is Michael Bennett. An $8,400 necklace was purchased yesterday using my credit card. I need to verify who authorized the transaction and where the item was delivered.””

“Certainly, Mr. Bennett. For security purposes, may I have the order number?””

He read it aloud.

Keys clicked in the background.

“Thank you. I can confirm the purchase was placed online and subsequently verified by telephone.””

“Who verified it?””

“The person who placed the order identified herself as Emily Bennett.””

I felt sick.

“That's impossible,” I said.

“I didn't call your store.””

The woman paused.

“I'm sorry, ma'am. The caller provided your name and confirmed several details associated with the order.””

“What details?””

“I can disclose the information to the cardholder, Mr. Bennett, but I may need to transfer you to our fraud department.””

“Please do that.””

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Michael, hang up! This is a private family matter.””

He raised one hand without looking at her.

“I'm not finished.””

The representative placed us on hold.

A soft instrumental melody played through the speaker.

Madison sat on the bottom stair, staring at her hands.

I watched Vanessa pace between the living room and hallway, whispering to herself. Twice, she looked toward the front door. Once, she picked up her phone and began typing.

“Who are you texting?”” Dad asked.

“Nobody.””

“Put the phone down.””

She obeyed, but her expression hardened.

When the fraud department finally answered, Dad explained the situation. The representative promised to flag the order, suspend collection authorization, and open an investigation into the disputed signature.

Then she asked whether he recognized the authorized collector.

“No,” Dad replied.

“I have never heard of him.””

Vanessa sank onto the couch.

The representative confirmed that the necklace had not yet been collected.

Dad thanked her and ended the call.

For a moment, I felt a small wave of relief.

At least the necklace was still at the store.

At least the stranger hadn't received it.

Then Dad opened his banking application.

“Vanessa, I need to know whether this is the only unauthorized purchase.””

She shook her head.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Then we'll review the statements together.””

He pulled a dining chair toward the table and opened the account history.

I stood behind him while he scrolled through the transactions.

There were ordinary purchases: groceries, gas, restaurant bills, utility payments.

Then he stopped.

A payment to a hotel.

Another payment to a restaurant downtown.

A charge for two concert tickets.

And a transfer of $3,000 to an account under the name Daniel Brooks.

Dad tapped the transfer.

“When did you send this money?””

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“I can explain that.””

“You've said that three times.””

“He needed help.””

“With what?””

“He was having financial difficulties.””

Dad looked up.

“So you gave him three thousand dollars from our joint account?””

“I intended to replace it!””

“When?””

“Michael, please!””

He leaned back in his chair.

I had never seen him look so exhausted.

“Did you use our savings to finance your relationship with this man?””

Vanessa started crying again.

But this time, Madison didn't go to comfort her.

Instead, she rose from the stairs and approached the table.

“Dad,” she said, her voice trembling, “there's something else you need to know.””

Vanessa stopped crying.

Madison glanced at her mother, then at me.

“The necklace wasn't supposed to be a gift.””

Dad frowned.

“What was it supposed to be?””

Madison swallowed hard.

“Mom told Daniel that she was going to leave you. She said the necklace was part of their plan to start a new life together.””

Vanessa shot to her feet.

“YOU UNGRATEFUL LITTLE—”

“Enough!”” Dad thundered.

The entire house fell silent.

He looked at Madison.

“When was she planning to leave?””

Madison's eyes filled with tears.

“After the Hawaii vacation.””

Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“Why Hawaii?””

Vanessa couldn't meet his eyes.

May you like

And then Madison whispered the answer.

“Because Mom told Daniel she was going to take the money from the vacation refund and disappear before you could stop her.””
