Chapter 9: Unit 214
Vanessa refused to enter the house until Dad stepped aside.
When she finally came in, she kept her eyes on the brass key in my hand.
“Where did you find it?”” she asked.
“In my mother's box.””
Her mouth trembled.
“Of course she hid it there.””
Dad shut the door.
“You knew Claire had a storage unit.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she kept evidence there.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And you accessed it four days after she died?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
Dad's voice rose.
“What did you take?””
“Nothing.””
“Don't lie to me!””
Vanessa flinched, then straightened.
“I went there because Robert told me Claire had left something that could ruin all of us. I didn't know what it was. I didn't find the key, and the facility manager told me the unit had already been cleared.””
Mr. Harrison studied her.
“Who told the facility that Claire had canceled the rental?””
“I don't know.””
“You signed the access record.””
“Because Robert told me to.””
I stared at her.
“You did everything Robert told you to do?””
“No.”” Her voice cracked.
“Not everything.””
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa sank into a chair.
For the first time, she looked less like the woman who had thrown my clothes down the stairs and more like someone who had been waiting years for a door to open.
“After Claire died, Robert told me that the estate documents were complicated,” she said.
“He said your mother had made promises she couldn't keep and that the house might be pulled into a lawsuit.””
“Was that true?”” I asked.
“Some of it. But he exaggerated everything. He told me that if I helped him keep the family business stable, he'd make sure Madison and I were financially secure.””
Dad stared at her.
“You married me because of my brother's promises?””
“No, Michael. I married you because I loved you. But Robert made me believe there was a way to protect my daughter without hurting yours.””
“You tried to take Emily's inheritance!””
“I know.””
“You threw her belongings down the stairs!””
Tears spilled down Vanessa's face.
“I know!””
Her sudden shout silenced the room.
She covered her mouth, then lowered her hands.
“I told myself it was only a bedroom. I told myself Emily was old enough to adjust, that Madison needed more space, that the house would eventually belong to the family anyway. I kept telling myself small lies until I couldn't see how cruel I'd become.””
I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
“Why did you beg me not to call Dad when I found the letter?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Because I knew the letter would lead you to the storage unit. And I knew what was inside.””
Mr. Harrison leaned forward.
“You said you never found the key.””
“I didn't.””
“Then how do you know what's inside?””
Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I found this in Robert's office six months ago. It was a copy of an inventory from the storage unit. He thought he'd destroyed every version.””
She placed it on the table.
The inventory listed boxes, folders, photographs, and several audio recordings.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*If anything happens to Claire, deliver the original recording to Daniel Harrison.*
Mr. Harrison read it twice.
“Where did you get this?””
“Robert's desk. I took a photograph of the page, then put the original back.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Robert threatened to expose something about my past if I did.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“What could he possibly know about your past that would justify this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I'll explain later. First, you need to understand that the recording isn't just about the money.””
I leaned forward.
“What is it about?””
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
“Claire recorded a conversation with Robert. She believed he was planning to use the company accounts to cover up a much larger fraud. She said she had evidence that someone had arranged a meeting with the truck driver before the accident.””
My stomach turned.
“Who arranged it?””
“I don't know. Robert never told me.””
“Then how do you know about the meeting?””
“Because I heard part of the recording.””
Dad grabbed the edge of the table.
“You heard it?””
“Only a few seconds. Robert was playing it in his office when I walked in. He shut it off as soon as he saw me.””
“What did you hear?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“A man's voice said, 'She'll be on that road before nine. Make sure the package reaches her before she gets home.''”
The room went silent.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
“Was that the truck driver?”” I asked.
“I don't know.””
“Was it Uncle Robert?””
“I don't know.””
“Then what do you know?””
Vanessa looked at me with tears streaming down her face.
“I know Robert was terrified when he realized Claire had made a copy of the recording. And I know he spent the next eleven years trying to find it.””
Dad turned toward Mr. Harrison.
“We need to go to the storage unit.””
Mr. Harrison nodded.
“I've already contacted the facility manager. We can meet him first thing tomorrow morning. If the unit has been accessed or altered, we'll document it before opening anything.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“No. You can't wait until tomorrow.””
“Why?”” I asked.
She glanced toward the windows.
“Because Robert knows I came here.””
As if summoned by her words, a car engine roared outside.
Headlights swept across the living room.
A dark SUV stopped at the curb.
Dad moved toward the window.
“Is that Robert?””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Emily, listen to me. Whatever you find in that unit, don't play the recording until Mr. Harrison is present.””
“Why?””
“Because the voice on that tape might not be the voice you expect.””
A car door slammed outside.
Then came three hard knocks.
Dad approached the front door, but Mr. Harrison raised a hand to stop him.
“Wait.””
The knocking came again.
A man's voice called through the door.
“Michael, I know Vanessa is inside. Open up.””
It was Uncle Robert.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely pale.
Then Robert shouted the words that changed everything.
“If Emily opens that storage unit, she'll learn why Claire was really on that road—and she'll learn what her father did to keep the truth buried.””
My father slowly turned toward me.
May you like
For the first time that night, I wondered whether the person I needed to fear most was standing on the other side of the door.
Or right beside me.
