Chapter 13: The Final Piece Of The Puzzle
I stared at the photograph on my phone.
My hands went cold.
Because sitting across from Brenda at the restaurant was Karen.
The same woman who had helped Ava record the videos.
The same woman who warned me about Brenda.
The same woman who claimed she wanted to protect my daughters.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
There had to be an explanation.
There had to be.
I immediately called Karen.
She answered after two rings.
“Daniel?””
I didn’t waste time.
“Why are you meeting Brenda?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then she whispered:
“You found out.””
My stomach tightened.
“You knew this would happen?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Karen sighed.
“I was trying to get information.””
“By meeting the person you told me was dangerous?””
“I know how it looks.””
“It looks like you were working with her.””
Another pause.
“I wasn’t.””
I wanted to believe her.
But after everything I had learned, trust was not something I gave easily anymore.
“Tell me the truth.””
Karen finally spoke.
“I met Brenda because I wanted her to admit what she did.””
“How?””
“I recorded our conversation.””
I looked at the phone.
“Where is it?””
“I have it.””
“Send it to me.””
She hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Send it.””
A few seconds later, a video appeared.
I opened it.
The quality was poor.
But the audio was clear.
Karen and Brenda were sitting at a small table.
Brenda looked relaxed.
Almost confident.
Karen asked:
“Do you really think nobody will ever find out?””
Brenda smiled.
“Find out what?””
“The letters.””
Brenda leaned back.
“They were never supposed to matter.””
My chest tightened.
“They mattered to Nia.””
Brenda shrugged.
“She needed to move on.””
Karen looked angry.
“She was a child.””
Brenda’s expression changed.
“No. She was a reminder.””
I froze.
“A reminder of what?””
Brenda looked away.
“Of everything I could never have.””
The restaurant became silent.
Then Karen asked:
“Is that why you treated her differently?””
Brenda didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“I spent years helping that family.””
Karen replied:
“You wanted them dependent on you.””
Brenda smiled.
“Everyone needs someone.””
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Because there it was.
The truth.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not a mistake.
A choice.
I called Karen back.
“You have the full recording?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?””
“Because I needed proof.””
I understood.
Because Brenda had spent years making people question reality.
Proof was the only thing she couldn’t manipulate.
That evening, I sat down with Nia.
I didn’t show her the video.
She had seen enough pain.
Instead, I told her something important.
“Your mother was right about one thing.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“People who love you don’t make you feel like you have to disappear.””
Nia looked down.
“I thought maybe if I was better, Brenda would like me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I took her hand.
“You were never the problem.””
She smiled faintly.
A real smile.
The kind I hadn’t seen in months.
The next morning, I met with Olivia and Karen.
Together, we organized everything.
The videos.
The letters.
The records.
The recording.
For the first time, Brenda’s story wasn’t the only one people heard.
But there was still one question.
Why had she stayed?
Why had she fought so hard to remain part of our family?
Olivia answered.
“She didn’t want the family.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“She wanted the position.””
Karen nodded.
“She wanted to be the person everyone needed.””
I looked at the evidence in front of me.
All the pieces finally connected.
The food.
The letters.
The manipulation.
The lies.
Everything was about control.
Then my phone rang.
It was the family counselor.
“Mr. Carter, I need to tell you something.””
“What happened?””
“We received a message from Brenda.””
My expression changed.
“What did she say?””
The counselor paused.
“She wants to meet with Nia.””
My heart immediately sank.
“Absolutely not.””
The counselor lowered her voice.
“She said she has something that belongs to Nia.””
I frowned.
“What?””
A long pause.
May you like
Then the counselor said:
“She claims it’s something your wife left behind.””
