Chapter 6: The File With My Son's Name
I met Rachel in a small coffee shop across town.
She arrived carrying a brown envelope.
She looked nervous.
Not the kind of nervous someone feels before sharing gossip.
The kind someone feels before opening a door they kept locked for years.
"You understand what happens if this gets out?"" she asked.
I nodded.
"I understand.""
She looked at me.
"No, you don't.""
She placed the envelope on the table.
"People like Mrs. Baxter don't work alone.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of documents.
Teacher evaluations.
Classroom notes.
Internal emails.
Then I saw it.
A folder with my son's name.
MALIK CARTER.
My hands went still.
"What is this?""
Rachel looked away.
"I found it in her desk when I was still working there.""
I opened the first page.
It wasn't about grades.
It wasn't about behavior.
It was a profile.
My son's age.
His test scores.
His reading level.
His family information.
I looked up.
"Why would a teacher have this?""
Rachel swallowed.
"That is what I asked.""
I flipped another page.
There was a section titled:
"Potential Challenges.""
Under it were notes.
"Strong personality.""
"Questions authority.""
"High confidence.""
I felt sick.
Those weren't problems.
Those were qualities.
Qualities someone had decided were dangerous.
"Who wrote this?"" I asked.
Rachel shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"But you said someone gave her information.""
"I said I suspected that.""
She pointed at the bottom of the page.
"Look.""
I leaned closer.
There was a signature.
Not Mrs. Baxter's.
Someone else's.
My eyes widened.
Because I knew that name.
It belonged to a person connected to the school district.
Someone with influence.
Someone who had the power to make complaints disappear.
Before I could process it, my phone rang.
It was Principal Reynolds.
I answered.
"Hello?""
Her voice was urgent.
"Mr. Carter, where are you?""
"Why?""
"You need to come back to the school.""
"What happened?""
A pause.
Then:
"We found something in Mrs. Baxter's classroom.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What?""
"Another recording.""
I looked at Rachel.
She went pale.
"From when?"" I asked.
Principal Reynolds lowered her voice.
"From before Malik's incident.""
"Who recorded it?""
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"A student.""
My heart started pounding.
"What student?""
The silence on the other end lasted too long.
May you like
Finally, Principal Reynolds whispered:
"Your son.""
