Chapter 1

My six-year-old daughter called my father sobbing, “Grandpa, please come save Mommy,” while my husband had me by the hair, forcing my head down toward the kitchen trash can. Ten minutes later, my father came through the front door and went straight for him.

It started over something stupid.

I had told my husband, Mark, that I wouldn’t give him money from our daughter’s savings account.

His face changed instantly.

“You always make me look like I’m begging.”

I stepped back.

“That money is for Emma.”

He grabbed my hair.

“Mark, let go of me.”

Emma screamed from the doorway.

“Daddy, stop!”

He dragged me across the kitchen and shoved my head toward the open trash can.

“You think you’re better than me?”

Emma ran over and grabbed his arm.

“Please don’t hurt Mommy!”

Mark turned and shoved her away.

She fell hard onto the floor.

That was the moment something inside me broke.

“DON’T TOUCH HER!”

But before I could reach Emma, she scrambled up and ran into the hallway.

She grabbed my phone from the couch.

Her little hands were shaking as she called the only person she knew would come.

My father.

“Grandpa?”

She could barely breathe through her crying.

“Daddy is hurting Mommy.”

There was a pause.

Then my father said, “Emma, where are you?”

“At home.”

“Go somewhere safe. I’m coming.”

Mark heard her.

He released me and stormed toward the hallway.

“You called him?”

Emma backed against the wall.

“I don’t want you hurting Mommy!”

Ten minutes later, someone started pounding on the front door.

Mark opened it.

My father, Robert, didn’t say a word.

He saw Emma crying.

He saw me holding my scalp.

Then he punched Mark.

Mark stumbled backward and swung at him.

They crashed into the dining table.

“Dad, stop!”

Neither man listened.

Mark shoved my father against the wall.

My father hit him again.

“You put your hands on my daughter?”

Mark shouted, “Stay out of my marriage!”

“My granddaughter called me because she was terrified of you!”

Emma screamed from behind me.

Then Mark suddenly yelled something that made my father freeze.

“Ask your daughter why she won’t leave!”

My father looked at me.

“What is he talking about?”

I couldn’t answer.

Mark laughed and pointed toward the locked cabinet under the stairs.

“She knows what happens if she walks out.”

My father stared at me.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Sarah?”

I whispered, “Dad, don’t open it.”

He walked toward the cabinet anyway.

Mark reached into his pocket and threw him the key.

“Go ahead.”

My father unlocked it.

Inside were photographs, legal documents, and a thick envelope with Emma’s name written across the front.

He pulled out the first page.

Then his hands started shaking.

“What the hell is this?”

Mark wiped his mouth and smiled.

“It’s the reason your daughter stayed.”

My father looked at me like he suddenly understood nothing about my life.

Then he read the document again and whispered, “Sarah… why does this say Mark isn’t Emma’s biological father?”
