Chapter 1

My Sister Hurt My Four-Year-Old Daughter And Called It “A Joke”—Then Rosie Whispered Something That Made The Entire Family Stop Me From Leaving.

I walked into the dining room carrying Rosie against my chest.

The laughter died instantly.

Her cheek was bruised.

Marks circled her little arms.

I looked directly at my sister.

“Who did this?”

Bethany calmly lifted her wineglass.

“It was just a joke. She needed toughening up.”

Something inside me snapped.

I moved Rosie safely to one side and confronted Bethany.

“You touched my child.”

The entire table recoiled.

Then my mother shouted at me instead.

As if protecting Rosie made me the problem.

I turned toward the door.

“She is my family. You are not.”

My father suddenly hurled a glass toward us.

I covered Rosie’s head and kept walking.

Then she tightened her arms around my neck.

“Daddy… don’t go to the car.”

I stopped.

“Why?”

Rosie looked back at the dining table.

Not at Bethany.

At someone else.

Then she whispered:

“Aunt Bethany wasn’t alone.”

The person she was staring at immediately stood up.

And suddenly I understood why nobody in that room had seemed surprised when I carried my injured daughter inside.
