Chapter 4: The Message He Never Deleted
Ethan stared at his phone for several seconds before saying anything.
The silence inside the reception hall felt heavier than any argument I had ever been part of.
Nobody danced.
Nobody whispered.
Nobody pretended this was still just a wedding.
Everyone was watching.
Watching me.
Watching Felicity.
Watching the groom.
Finally, Ethan lifted his eyes.
“I didn’t know this was how it would come out.””
Felicity’s face tightened.
“How what would come out?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was when I knew.
There was something else.
Something everyone seemed to know except me.
I looked at Silas.
“What is happening?””
His expression softened.
“Jenna, I think you deserve to hear this from Ethan.””
The groom stepped away from the head table.
His wedding suit was perfect. His hair was perfect. Everything about him looked like someone who belonged in a magazine.
But right now, he looked like a man carrying a secret that had become too heavy.
He stopped a few feet from me.
“I’m sorry.””
I frowned.
“For what?””
He glanced at Felicity.
Then back at me.
“For not telling you sooner.””
My stomach tightened.
“Telling me what?””
Felicity stepped forward.
“Ethan, don’t.””
Everyone heard the warning in her voice.
It wasn’t fear.
It was panic.
Ethan looked at her.
“I thought you deserved to know.””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
I saw it.
The confidence was gone.
“Know what?”” I asked.
Ethan unlocked his phone.
He walked closer and turned the screen toward me.
There was a message thread.
At the top was my name.
JENNA CARTER.
My heart stopped.
“I found your name three months ago,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because of my sister.””
The room became even quieter.
“Olivia?””
He nodded.
“My sister never forgot you.””
My fingers tightened around the letter Silas had given me.
“She told you about me?””
“Every year.””
Ethan looked down at the phone.
“She kept a journal after the accident. She wrote about the people who helped her survive.””
His voice lowered.
“You were the first name in that journal.””
I didn’t know what to say.
For twelve years, I had wondered if Olivia remembered me.
If those hours sitting beside her mattered.
If any of it made a difference.
And now I was standing in a wedding hall surrounded by strangers who knew my name because of something I did when I was barely an adult.
Ethan continued.
“When I got engaged to Felicity, my father recognized her last name.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Silas looked away.
That was when I understood.
There was another connection.
Ethan sighed.
“Before we got married, my father looked into Felicity’s family.””
Felicity immediately interrupted.
“Because he’s controlling.””
Silas ignored her.
“And he found out Richard Carter had a daughter named Jenna.””
I felt cold.
“Why would that matter?””
Ethan looked at Felicity.
“Because Olivia had been trying to find you.””
The room shifted.
Felicity’s eyes widened.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“My sister wanted to invite you to our wedding.””
I stared.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He looked embarrassed.
“She wanted to meet the nurse who changed her life.””
My chest tightened.
“But I never received anything.””
Nobody spoke.
That was the answer.
I didn’t need anyone to say it.
I already knew.
I turned slowly toward Felicity.
She looked away.
“Felicity?””
Her lips parted.
“I…”
Silas’s voice cut through the room.
“You never told Jenna.””
Felicity’s face turned red.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Silas said.
“I understand perfectly.””
The guests were watching her now.
Not me.
Her.
The spotlight she had spent her whole life chasing had finally moved.
And she hated it.
“She told me Jenna wasn’t interested in attending,” Ethan said quietly.
My heart sank.
“What?””
Felicity looked at him.
“Because you weren’t.””
I stared at her.
“You told them I didn’t want to come?””
She crossed her arms.
“I was trying to avoid drama.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Drama?””
My voice shook.
“You erased my invitation.””
A few guests gasped.
Felicity looked defensive.
“You always make things complicated.””
That sentence.
That same sentence.
The one I had heard my entire life.
The problem was never what she did.
The problem was always that I reacted.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did Olivia know?””
His face fell.
“No.””
A painful silence followed.
“She thought you declined.””
My eyes burned.
A teenage girl who remembered a stranger’s kindness for twelve years thought I ignored her.
Because my sister decided I didn’t deserve to be there.
I looked at Felicity.
And for the first time in my life, I didn’t feel hurt.
I felt tired.
“So that’s what this was?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“You didn’t introduce me as ‘just a nurse’ because you forgot.””
Her silence answered.
“You did it because you wanted everyone here to see me as less.””
Felicity’s jaw tightened.
“You always think people are against you.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“At least tonight, I know I’m not imagining it.””
Nobody laughed.
Nobody defended her.
And that was the part she couldn’t handle.
Felicity turned toward my father.
“Dad, say something.””
Richard opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
For once, he had no excuse.
No explanation.
No way to pretend he hadn’t seen.
Silas stepped beside me.
“Jenna.””
I looked at him.
“There is one more thing.””
I felt exhausted.
“What now?””
His expression became serious.
“The reason I wanted to find you wasn’t only to thank you.””
My heart sank.
“Then why?””
Silas reached into his jacket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
In handwriting I didn’t recognize.
But the date made my blood run cold.
It was written two years before tonight.
Before this wedding.
Before Felicity ever knew I would be here.
Silas handed it to me.
“Olivia wrote this for you.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn’t I receive it?””
Silas looked toward Felicity.
And the entire room followed his gaze.
May you like
Because suddenly everyone understood.
This wedding wasn’t the first time my sister had kept something from me.
