Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw a filthy wet towel straight into my face in front of the entire family because she said my house wasn’t clean enough. What hurt worse was watching my husband stand there and say nothing.

It happened during a Sunday family gathering at our home outside Atlanta.

My husband, Jason, had invited nearly twenty relatives over without telling me until the night before.

I spent the entire morning cooking, cleaning, and chasing our four-year-old son around the house.

By noon, my hands were shaking from exhaustion.

Then Jason’s mother, Linda, arrived.

She walked through the living room like she was inspecting a hotel.

“Dust.”

She dragged one finger across a shelf and held it up.

I forced a smile.

“I didn’t get to everything.”

Linda laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“You had all morning.”

My face burned.

Jason stood beside his brother and stared at the floor.

Then Linda noticed a little juice stain near the kitchen doorway.

She grabbed the cleaning towel from the sink and wiped it across the dirty floor.

“I guess someone has to teach you how to keep my son’s home clean.”

“Linda, stop.”

She turned toward me.

The towel in her hand was soaked with gray, dirty water.

Before I could move, she threw it directly into my face.

The room went completely silent.

Dirty water ran down my cheek and onto my shirt.

A few relatives looked away.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.”

I looked at Jason.

“Are you seriously going to let her do this?”

He said nothing.

Linda smiled.

“That’s what I thought.”

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed the towel from the floor and rushed toward her.

She barely had time to step back before I shoved the filthy towel against her mouth.

“If you love dirt so much, you can have it.”

Linda screamed and slapped my hands away.

Jason finally moved.

But instead of coming toward me, he rushed to his mother.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” he shouted at me.

I stared at the man I had been married to for seven years.

Then our four-year-old son suddenly walked into the room holding Jason’s unlocked phone.

“Mommy,” he said quietly, “why did Daddy tell Grandma you would be gone after today?”
