Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped me while holding the ultrasound showing I was pregnant with another girl. She said her family needed a grandson—and my husband’s silence frightened me most.
“It’s a girl,” the doctor had told me that morning.
I cried with happiness all the way home.
But Diane snatched the ultrasound from my hand before I could tell anyone.
“Another girl?” she shouted.
“Our baby is healthy. That’s what matters.”
She slapped me across the face.
“This family needs a boy, not another useless daughter.”
My six-year-old, Lily, ran into the kitchen.
“Don’t hurt Mommy!”
Diane shoved the ultrasound against my chest.
“You have failed my son again.”
I raised my phone. “Leave before I call the police.”
Then my husband, Ryan, walked through the door.
I expected him to defend me.
Instead, he quietly locked it.
“Mom shouldn’t have hit you,” he said, “but she’s right about the problem.”
I instinctively covered my stomach.
“Our daughter is not a problem.”
Diane placed a clinic brochure on the table.
An appointment had already been scheduled for the next morning.
My name was printed at the top.
“I never agreed to this.”
Ryan would not meet my eyes.
“You’ll go, and afterward we can try again.”
I tore the paper in half.
Diane grabbed my arm, but Lily bit her hand.
“Run, Mommy!”
Ryan caught me before I reached the back door.
Then a man’s voice sounded from the baby monitor on the counter.
“Let her go, Ryan.”
Everyone froze.
My father was standing in Lily’s bedroom, listening through the monitor.
Diane’s face went white because she believed he was still in Boston.
He entered the kitchen holding documents from my late father-in-law’s attorney.

“The family trust never required a male heir,” he said.
Then he looked at me and added, “But it does say exactly what happens if Ryan harms the granddaughter who already owns everything.”
