Chapter 1

My mother-in-law ripped the bottle from my hand and forced milk into my five-month-old son’s mouth because he wouldn’t stop crying. What happened when I tried to stop her changed our family forever.

I had been staying with my husband’s mother, Patricia, outside Phoenix while we saved money for our own apartment.

At first, she acted like having baby Noah in the house was a blessing.

But whenever my husband Michael left for work, Patricia became someone else.

That afternoon, Noah had been crying for almost twenty minutes.

I rocked him against my chest and whispered, “It’s okay, sweetheart. Mommy’s here.”

I offered him his bottle again.

He turned his little face away.

Patricia stormed into the kitchen.

“For heaven’s sake, Sarah, make that baby eat.”

“He isn’t hungry right now.”

She rolled her eyes.

“You’re letting a five-month-old control you.”

Before I could answer, she snatched the bottle from my hand.

“Patricia, give it back.”

She ignored me.

She grabbed Noah and pressed the bottle against his mouth.

He immediately started crying harder.

“Stop!” I shouted.

“He needs to learn!”

Then she tipped the bottle up and kept forcing milk toward his mouth while he struggled and coughed.

I lunged forward and knocked the bottle from her hand.

Milk splashed across the floor.

“What is WRONG with you?”

Patricia grabbed my arm.

“Don’t you dare touch me in my house.”

I pulled away, but she shoved me against the counter.

I pushed her back and reached for Noah.

She grabbed my hair.

For several seconds, we struggled in the kitchen while my baby screamed between us.

Then the front door flew open.

Michael had come home early.

He stared at his mother gripping my hair, the bottle lying on the floor, and Noah crying in my arms.

“Mom?”

Patricia released me instantly.

“She attacked me!”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She was forcing the bottle into Noah’s mouth!”

Michael looked from me to his mother.

Then Patricia suddenly pointed at my diaper bag.

“Ask your wife why she’s really been taking that baby to the doctor without telling you.”

My blood went cold.

Michael slowly turned toward me.

May you like

“What is she talking about?”

And before I could answer, Patricia pulled a folded medical document from her pocket.
