Chapter 1

My mother-in-law poured milk over my three-month-old son’s head because he wouldn’t stop crying—and when I slapped her, my husband walked through the door and saw everything.

That afternoon, I was running on two hours of sleep in our house outside Dallas.

My son Noah had been crying for almost twenty minutes and refusing his bottle.

My mother-in-law, Linda, had been staying with us for a week because my husband Ryan insisted I “needed help.”

“Give him to me,” she snapped.

“I’ve got him,” I said, rocking Noah against my chest.

Linda rolled her eyes.

“You baby him too much.”

Before I could answer, my phone rang in the kitchen.

I put Noah safely in his bassinet and stepped away for less than a minute.

Then I heard him scream.

Not cry.

Scream.

I ran back and froze.

Linda was standing over the bassinet holding Noah’s bottle upside down.

Milk was running through his hair, down his tiny face, and onto his blanket.

“What did you do?”

“He wouldn’t drink it,” she said coldly. “Maybe now he’ll learn to stop wasting food.”

I rushed forward and lifted Noah into my arms.

“You poured milk on a three-month-old baby?”

“Oh, stop being dramatic.”

Something inside me snapped.

When Linda reached for Noah again, I shoved her hand away.

She stumbled backward and fell against the couch.

“You crazy little—”

She stood and grabbed my wrist.

I slapped her.

The sound filled the room.

And at that exact second, the front door opened.

Ryan stood there in his work clothes, staring at his mother’s red cheek.

Then he looked at me.

Then at Noah, soaked and screaming in my arms.

“Sarah,” he said slowly. “What the hell did you do?”

Linda burst into tears instantly.

“She attacked me!”

“That’s a lie!” I shouted. “Look at your son!”

Ryan stepped toward us, his face turning dark.

I expected him to take Noah from me.

Instead, he looked at the milk-covered blanket and whispered, “Mom… you promised me you’d never do this again.”

I stopped breathing.

“Again?”

Linda’s face changed completely.

Ryan realized what he had just said.

And then I noticed the locked drawer behind him—the one he had forbidden me to open since the day Noah was born.
