Chapter 1

My mother-in-law grabbed me by the hair in front of my husband and screamed that I had stolen her diamond ring. What happened next made the whole room go silent.
We had just finished Sunday dinner at my in-laws’ house outside Dallas.
Everyone moved to the living room while I stayed behind cleaning plates for twelve people.
My husband, Ethan, didn’t even look back.
“Emily can handle it,” his mother, Margaret, said with a little laugh.
Twenty minutes later, I heard a scream from upstairs.
“My ring!”
Margaret came running into the kitchen with her face twisted in rage.
Before I could ask what happened, she grabbed a fistful of my hair.
“You little thief!”
“Margaret, let go of me!”
She dragged me out of the kitchen while everyone stared.
Ethan jumped up, but instead of helping me, he asked, “Emily, what did you do?”
I couldn’t believe him.
“She stole my grandmother’s diamond ring,” Margaret shouted.
“I never touched your ring!”
Margaret shoved me toward the couch.
“Then empty your purse.”
My stomach dropped because I had left my purse alone in the hallway all evening.
“Go ahead,” Ethan said quietly.
That hurt worse than Margaret’s hand in my hair.
His sister dumped my purse onto the coffee table.
My wallet fell out.
My keys.
A lipstick.
Then something small hit the hardwood floor.
Everyone froze.
A diamond ring rolled beneath the coffee table.
Margaret smiled.
“I knew it.”
Ethan stared at me like he didn’t recognize his own wife.
“I swear I’ve never seen that ring before.”
Margaret reached for her phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Then my eight-year-old niece, Sophie, began crying in the corner.
Her mother told her to go upstairs, but Sophie shook her head.
“Aunt Emily didn’t take it.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“Sophie, be quiet.”
The little girl pulled an iPad from behind the couch.
“I was making videos during dinner.”
Margaret suddenly lunged toward her.

But Sophie pressed play first.
And on the screen, we watched Margaret walk into the hallway, look around carefully, and reach for my purse.
