happy

Chapter 1

My mother-in-law dragged my five-year-old daughter across the party by her hair—then claimed the terrified child had stolen $3,000 from her purse.

Everyone was singing happy birthday when Lily’s scream cut through our backyard.

I dropped the cake knife and turned around.

Diane had one fist tangled in my daughter’s hair.

“Give me my money, you little thief!”

She dragged Lily between the tables as our relatives watched in shock.

I ran over and shoved Diane away.

She fell beside the gift table, knocking several boxes to the ground.

I immediately wrapped Lily in my arms.

Her hands were trembling against my chest.

“Mommy, I didn’t do anything.”

Diane climbed up and pointed at us.

“That child stole the cash from my purse!”

My husband, Michael, hurried to his mother’s side.

“You pushed Mom in front of everyone?”

“She was hurting our daughter,” I snapped.

Diane opened her purse and showed everyone the empty pocket.

“I brought $3,000 for Michael’s birthday, and Lily took it.”

“She’s five,” I said.

“She was alone in my bedroom ten minutes ago.”

Lily shook her head.

“Grandma told me to go there.”

Diane suddenly demanded that Michael search Lily’s little pink backpack.

I told him not to touch it.

But Michael grabbed the bag and opened it.

A thick envelope dropped onto the patio.

The guests began whispering.

Diane smiled coldly.

“Now you see what kind of child she is.”

Michael counted the money and stared at Lily.

“Why was this inside your backpack?”

“I didn’t put it there,” Lily sobbed.

Then my nine-year-old son, Ethan, stepped out from behind the curtains.

“I saw who put it there.”

Diane’s smile vanished.

Ethan raised the phone he had been using to record the birthday decorations.

But before he could play the video, Diane lunged toward him—and Michael finally realized she wasn’t trying to recover her money.

She was trying to destroy the evidence.
