Chapter 14: David’s Voice

The police reached Central Station before we did.

Detective Morris allowed Michael and me into the main concourse only after officers had secured the platforms.

Diane wasn’t there.

But something was.

The black recorder sat on a bench at Platform Six.

Beside it was Lily’s pink birthday crown.

Michael stared through the glass doors.

“She’s playing with us.””

Morris nodded.

“She wants control.””

An officer carried the recorder toward us in an evidence bag.

“We found a note.””

Morris read it.

Her expression tightened.

“What?””

She turned the paper toward me.

*PLAY TRACK 4. CLAIRE DESERVES THAT MUCH.*

Peter arrived with another detective ten minutes later.

He looked exhausted.

I stepped toward him.

“Is Track Four David?””

Peter nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then play it.””

Morris hesitated.

“Please.””

She finally agreed to let us hear a copied recording after technicians preserved the original.

The speaker crackled.

Static.

Then David’s voice filled the room.

My knees almost gave out.

“Peter, if you’re hearing this, things got worse.””

I covered my mouth.

Six years disappeared.

David sounded tired.

Alive.

“I confirmed what Diane suspected. Ethan isn’t biologically mine.””

I shut my eyes.

“But he is my son.””

My breath broke.

“Nothing changes that.””

Michael stood perfectly still beside me.

David continued.

“I met Michael Bennett today.””

My eyes opened.

Michael whispered, “What?””

On the recording, David sighed.

“He doesn’t know about Ethan. I made sure of that.””

Michael stared at Peter.

“You met David?””

Peter looked down.

The recording continued.

“Michael seems decent. Confused, but decent. Diane has been manipulating him too.””

I looked at Michael.

David had met him.

Before he died.

Before Michael and I consciously met again.

“I considered telling Claire,” David said.

“But she’s pregnant with Lily, and Diane is escalating. Claire thinks the worst thing in our lives right now is morning sickness.””

A sob escaped me.

I remembered.

David making crackers at two in the morning.

David rubbing my back.

David promising Lily would complete our family.

“I want Claire protected from this until I can shut it down.””

Static crackled.

Then David’s voice hardened.

“Diane doesn’t want money.””

Michael looked at me.

“She wants Ethan recognized as a Bennett.””

I felt my skin crawl.

“She says blood has rights. She says Michael has a right to his son and she has a right to her grandson.””

Michael whispered, “No.””

“I told her children aren’t property.””

My tears fell.

“She threatened court. Exposure. DNA. Anything that would force Claire to acknowledge Michael.””

David paused.

“If I die before this is settled, Claire needs to know one thing.””

The room became silent.

“Do not let Diane convince you that biology makes her Ethan’s family.””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Family is who protects a child when nobody is watching.””

I looked at Ethan’s video on my phone.

My nine-year-old son protecting his little sister.

David’s voice softened.

“Michael, if somehow you hear this one day…”

Michael stopped breathing.

“I don’t know you well. But if Ethan really is yours, don’t take him from Claire.””

Michael covered his mouth.

“Don’t make him choose fathers. I’ve been his dad since his first breath. If I’m gone, be whatever he needs next.””

Michael turned away, crying silently.

Then David said something none of us expected.

“And Diane—if you hear this—what you did at the hospital was unforgivable.””

My head snapped toward the speaker.

Hospital?

Peter went pale.

David continued.

“You altered the record before you had proof.””

I stared at Peter.

“You knew?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“She used Michael’s information to create a false record,” David said.

“Then she showed it to me as if it were official. That’s when I tested Ethan.””

The fake hospital record.

The red circle.

It had been bait.

David’s voice hardened.

“You nearly destroyed my marriage with a lie to uncover a truth.””

I whispered, “Oh my God.””

Diane had forged evidence before she even knew.

Then chance had rewarded her obsession.

The second paternity test had shown David wasn’t Ethan’s biological father.

But it still had not proven Michael was.

“Peter has the legitimate test,” David continued.

“The one Diane has never seen.””

Everyone turned toward Peter.

Michael stepped toward him.

“What legitimate test?””

Peter looked trapped.

“David asked me to seal it.””

“Whose DNA?””

Peter said nothing.

Michael shouted, “Whose?””

“Yours.””

The room went silent.

My heart pounded.

“You tested Michael?””

Peter nodded.

“David obtained a sample after their meeting.””

Michael looked sick.

“How?””

“A coffee cup.””

“That’s illegal.””

“It was certainly ethically questionable.””

“And the result?””

Peter looked at me.

“David ordered me not to disclose it unless Diane attempted to claim Ethan.””

“She just framed a child and stole a trust!””

“I know.””

“Then tell us!””

Peter reached into his briefcase.

Detective Morris immediately stopped him.

After checking the envelope, she handed it to Michael.

His fingers shook.

He opened it.

I couldn’t look.

“Michael?””

He read silently.

Then tears filled his eyes.

He handed me the page.

Probability of paternity:

*99.99%.*

My legs buckled.

Michael caught me.

Neither of us spoke.

Ethan was his biological son.

But David’s voice still played.

“If the result confirms Michael, it changes DNA.””

A pause.

“It does not erase me.””

I sobbed.

“No.””

“And it does not give Diane ownership of my boy.””

The recording crackled.

Then David’s tone changed.

“Tomorrow I’m meeting Diane one last time. Peter knows where.””

Peter closed his eyes.

“I’m bringing everything.””

Static.

“If she refuses to stop, I’m going to the police.””

The recording ended.

I stared at Peter.

“Tomorrow was the day David died.””

He nodded.

“You knew he was going to meet her.””

“Yes.””

“Were you there?””

Peter swallowed.

“Yes.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You told us his accident happened on the way there.””

Peter’s face collapsed.

“No.””

My stomach turned.

“He met her first?””

Peter nodded.

“What happened?””

Before he could answer, Detective Morris’s radio crackled.

An officer’s voice came through.

“Detective, we have the Bennett woman.””

Michael turned.

“Where?””

The officer responded.

“Parking structure, east side.””

Morris grabbed her radio.

“Is she in custody?””

A pause.

“Not yet.””

“Why not?””

Another pause.

Then:

“She’s standing on the hood of a car holding a gasoline can.””

May you like

My blood froze.

“And she has a box of documents.””
