Chapter 1

My mother-in-law beat me with a metal broom handle until my legs gave out. My husband watched—and told me I deserved it.
It happened inside our suburban Dallas home while my seven-year-old daughter, Lily, was doing homework nearby.
My mother-in-law, Diane, had been living with us for six months.
That evening, she ordered me to cancel Lily’s birthday party because she wanted the money for a weekend trip.
I quietly said, “That money belongs to Lily.”
Diane’s face hardened.
“In my son’s house, you don’t tell me no.”
“This is my home too,” I replied.
She grabbed the metal broom leaning beside the pantry.
Before I could move, she swung it against my shoulder.
I screamed and stumbled into the kitchen table.
Lily ran toward me, crying, “Stop hurting Mommy!”
Diane raised the handle again.
My husband, Ryan, walked through the front door at that exact moment.
I thought I was safe.
Instead, he looked at his mother and asked, “What did she do this time?”
Diane pointed at me as I struggled to breathe.
“She disrespected me and tried to throw me out.”
“That’s a lie,” I whispered.
Ryan stepped over my broken coffee mug and stared down at me.
“You know how Mom gets when you provoke her.”
Diane struck my leg, and I collapsed beside Lily’s chair.
Ryan still didn’t stop her.
He only said, “Apologize, Emily, and this can end.”
Lily wrapped both arms around my neck.
“She didn’t do anything, Daddy!”
Ryan pulled Lily away while Diane lifted the broom again.
Then a deep voice came from the open doorway.
“Put that down before I make you.”
My father-in-law, James, stood there holding a thick envelope.
Diane suddenly went pale.
Ryan whispered, “Dad, you’re supposed to be in Chicago.”
James walked toward me, but his eyes never left his wife.
“I came back because the bank called about the house.”
Diane tightened her grip on the broom.

James opened the envelope and placed a signed deed on the table.
“This house was never Ryan’s,” he said. “And after what I just witnessed, Diane, you should be very worried about whose name is actually on it.”
