Chapter 11: Project Clean Break
At 7:30 the next morning, Elaine and I sat in a conference room with Laura, reviewing the information Jessica had provided.
She had agreed to preserve her messages and cooperate with the investigation. She had also sent screenshots of the folder on Daniel's laptop, including several filenames.
One read:
Clean_Break_Final.
Another:
Trust_Release.
The third was simply:
Sarah_Exit.
I stared at the last filename.
“What does he mean by my exit?””
“We don't know yet,” Elaine said.
“We need the underlying documents, not assumptions based on filenames.””
Jessica had agreed to meet us at the office that morning to provide a formal account of what she had seen. She arrived wearing jeans and a gray sweater, her face pale from lack of sleep.
She sat opposite Elaine.
“Daniel kept a second laptop in the study at the house,” she explained.
“He told me it was for business. I wasn't supposed to use it, but last week he left it open.””
“What did you see?”” Elaine asked.
“A folder containing documents about Sarah's company and a series of spreadsheets. I recognized the company name because Daniel had talked about selling it.””
“Did you open any of the documents?””
“Two. One was a draft acquisition agreement. The other was a spreadsheet showing payments to several accounts.””
Laura leaned forward.
“Did you recognize any account names?””
“One was Meridian Advisory Services.””
Laura and Elaine exchanged a glance.
Jessica continued.
“Daniel came home while I was looking at the spreadsheet. I closed the laptop, but he asked why I was in his study. I told him I was looking for a charger.””
“Did he believe you?””
“I don't know. But yesterday he demanded my phone and asked whether I had spoken to Sarah.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me about the folder when we first met?””
Jessica lowered her eyes.
“Because I was still hoping Daniel would explain everything. I thought he might have a legitimate reason for the financial arrangements.””
“And now?””
“Now I think he was planning to use me as an excuse for what he did.””
The honesty in her answer surprised me.
It didn't erase what she had done, but it sounded less rehearsed than her earlier explanations.
Elaine placed a document on the table.
“Jessica, I need you to understand that any evidence you provide must be preserved in its original form. Don't access Daniel's accounts or devices without authorization. If you have screenshots or messages you already possess, keep them unchanged and provide them through the proper channels.””
Jessica nodded.
“I will.””
After she left, Elaine contacted the investigator coordinating the financial inquiry.
By lunchtime, we had confirmation that the bank had placed additional safeguards on the disputed transactions while the matter was reviewed.
It wasn't a verdict against Daniel.
It wasn't even proof that every transfer had been unauthorized.
But it meant he could no longer move money as easily as he had before.
At 2:16 p.m., Daniel appeared at my office.
My receptionist called to ask whether I wanted him admitted.
“No,” I said.
Two minutes later, my phone rang.
“Sarah, tell your receptionist to stop treating me like a stranger.””
“You can communicate through Elaine.””
“I'm your husband!””
“You're also the person who tried to sell my company without my permission.””
His voice hardened.
“You've been feeding information to Jessica.””
“She contacted me.””
“She stole confidential documents.””
“Then you should discuss that with your attorney.””
He laughed sharply.
“You think you're clever because you have lawyers surrounding you. But you don't understand the agreements you signed.””
“I understand that I didn't authorize you to sell my business.””
“Your signature says otherwise.””
“Then explain it to the investigators.””
There was a long pause.
When he spoke again, his voice had changed.
“Your father would be ashamed of you.””
The words struck a nerve so deep that I stood up from my desk.
“Don't you dare use my father against me.””
“He wanted you to have a stable marriage. He wanted you to be happy.””
“He wanted me to be safe.””
Daniel said nothing.
“And he knew you were asking questions about my finances before he died.””
The silence on the line became absolute.
I heard him inhale.
“Who told you that?””
I felt my hands go cold.
“You just confirmed it.””
“Sarah, listen to me. Your father misunderstood a lot of things.””
“What things?””
“He was suspicious of everyone. He didn't trust anyone with money.””
“He trusted me.””
“And look where that got him.””
The sentence hung between us.
I couldn't move.
Daniel seemed to realize what he had said.
“That's not what I meant.””
“What did you mean?””
“Sarah—”
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I stood at my office window, staring at the traffic below.
I wanted to believe Daniel's comment had been a cruel attempt to provoke me. I wanted to believe he had simply lost control of his temper.
But I couldn't forget the date beside the words Trust Release.
Or the fact that my father had died shortly before the estate paperwork became complicated.
Elaine called me back into the conference room.
“We've received an update from the investigator,” she said.
“The trust administrator has confirmed that the beneficiary-change request was submitted electronically using credentials associated with your former home network.””
“Daniel's network?””
“Possibly. The administrator has preserved the technical records, but we need the relevant providers to verify who used the device.””
I sat down.
“Can they prove it was him?””
“Not yet. But the records give us a clear direction for the investigation.””
She placed another page in front of me.
It was an extract from the trust file showing that Daniel had contacted Martin Cole's office twice after my father's death.
The first call was recorded as a general inquiry.
The second was different.
According to the contemporaneous notes, Daniel had asked whether an inheritance could be redirected if the beneficiary was “unable to manage her affairs.””
I felt sick.
“Did Martin tell him how to do it?””
“No. The notes indicate that Martin refused to discuss changes without your direct participation.””
I leaned back in my chair.
Daniel had tried to sell my company, transfer my inheritance, and obtain property in my name. Every scheme seemed designed to make me financially dependent on him after the marriage ended.
But the question about my ability to manage my affairs frightened me more than the others.
“What would happen if someone claimed I wasn't competent to control my own money?””
“That would require evidence and a proper legal process. A claim alone doesn't transfer ownership. But it could create serious complications, which is why we're documenting everything.””
I looked at the page.
“Could Daniel have planned to use the company sale to support that claim?””
“It's possible he intended to portray you as an unreliable business owner. But we cannot conclude that from the evidence currently available.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
Please call me. I have something Daniel doesn't know I kept.
I called immediately.
She answered in a whisper.
“Sarah, I found the original envelope from Meridian Advisory Services. Mark told me to destroy it months ago, but I kept it.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel promised us that once the company deal closed, everything would be settled. Mark thought it meant we could finally stop worrying about the money.””
“What was in the envelope?””
“Bank instructions. Transfer details. And a letter signed by Daniel.””
“Can you send it to Elaine?””
“I can bring it to you.””
“Vanessa, don't alter anything. Keep it exactly as it is, and let Elaine tell you how to preserve it.””
She began crying again.
“Sarah, there's something else. The letter says the transfers were part of a plan to pay off a debt.””
“What debt?””
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Daniel owed someone a lot of money before he ever met you.””
I sat completely still.
“How much?””
“I don't know the exact amount.””
“Who did he owe?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“That's the part you're not going to believe.””
She told me a name.
And suddenly, the mysterious payments, the rushed company sale, and Daniel's desperation to obtain my inheritance began to look like pieces of a much larger problem.

The name she gave me was Richard Mitchell.
His own father.
