Chapter 1

My Husband Smashed a Dinner Plate Over My Head Because I Refused to Give His Mother My Apartment—Then I Called 911 and Said, “You Have No Idea Who You’re Dealing With.”

The argument began when Derek’s mother, Diane, slid a property-transfer form across our dinner table.

“Sign it,” she said. “That apartment should belong to family.”

The Boston apartment had been mine long before I married Derek.

My late father bought it so I would always have somewhere safe to live.

“I’m not giving it away,” I said.

Derek’s expression changed instantly.

“You promised to respect my mother.”

“Respect doesn’t mean surrendering my property.”

Diane leaned back and smiled.

“I warned you she was selfish, son.”

Derek grabbed my wrist and shoved the form toward me.

“Sign it now.”

I pulled free and tore the document in half.

The next sound was a dinner plate cracking against my head.

I fell beside the table as blood ran past my ear.

Diane didn’t scream or help me.

She simply handed Derek a towel and said, “Clean the plate pieces before the police arrive.”

That was when I realized they had planned this.

Derek crouched beside me and whispered, “Tell them you slipped.”

I wiped the blood from my face and reached for my phone.

He laughed when he saw me dial 911.

“This is my house,” he said. “They’ll believe me.”

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

His smile faded when I gave the dispatcher my full legal name.

Diane suddenly stood.

“Why did you use the name Bennett?”

I had used my married name for three years, but Bennett was the name on my apartment deed.

It was also the name Derek had apparently never bothered to research.

Sirens grew louder outside.

I reached beneath the dining table and removed a small recording device.

Derek lunged for it, but I held up my other hand.

“The footage was uploaded the moment you touched me.”

Two officers entered and ordered Derek away from me.

Diane began shouting that I had provoked him.

Then a third person walked through the doorway carrying a federal badge.

Derek stared at him and whispered, “Why is he here?”

The agent placed a photograph beside the torn transfer form.

It showed Derek and Diane entering my apartment while I was supposedly away on business.

I looked at my husband and asked, “What exactly were you searching for behind my father’s wall?”

The agent opened his evidence bag—and Derek’s face went completely white.
