Chapter 1

My husband slapped our five-year-old daughter across the face in the middle of her birthday party. Then she looked at me through her tears and said one sentence that made the entire room go silent.

We were celebrating Lily’s fifth birthday at our home outside Atlanta.

The backyard was full of family, balloons, cake, and children running around.

For once, everything felt normal.

Then Lily climbed onto a chair beside her father, Daniel.

“Daddy, can I tell Mommy what I saw?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“What are you talking about?”

Lily pointed across the yard at my sister-in-law, Jessica.

“You told me it was a secret.”

I saw Daniel’s hand tighten around his glass.

“Lily, go play.”

But she shook her head.

“You said secrets are bad.”

People nearby started looking at us.

I walked closer.

“What secret, sweetheart?”

Daniel stood up so fast his chair fell backward.

“Emily, she’s five. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Lily looked confused.

“But Daddy, I saw you.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Stop.”

She started crying.

“You kissed Aunt Jessica in Mommy’s bedroom.”

The entire party went silent.

Jessica dropped her fork.

I stared at my husband.

“What did she just say?”

Daniel’s face turned red.

Then, before anyone could react, he slapped Lily.

My daughter screamed and fell against the table.

I lunged forward, pulled her into my arms, and shoved Daniel away.

“YOU HIT HER?”

“She’s lying!” he shouted.

Lily buried her face in my chest.

Then she whispered, “Mommy, I’m not lying.”

Jessica suddenly started crying.

And my mother-in-law rushed toward Daniel, grabbed his arm, and hissed, “You promised me the child would never find out.”

I slowly turned toward her.

“Find out what?”

May you like

Lily lifted her head.

Then Jessica placed both hands over her stomach and whispered, “Emily… I’m pregnant.”
