Chapter 1

My Husband Slapped Me in Front of His Mother and Our Daughter Because I Refused to Hand Over My Credit Card—He Forgot Whose House He Was Standing In.
The slap came so fast that my eight-year-old daughter screamed before I even understood what had happened.
“Mom!”
I held my burning cheek and stared at my husband, Ryan.
His mother, Linda, was standing beside him with her hand stretched toward me.
“I asked for the card,” she said coldly.
I had already paid her rent twice that year, covered her car repairs, and given her thousands for “emergencies.”
This time, I had finally said no.
Linda laughed when she saw my face.
“Look at you. So selfish over a little money.”
“A little money?” I whispered.
Ryan stepped closer.
“Just give Mom the card, Emily.”
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“She’s family.”
“So am I.”
That was when he slapped me.
Our daughter, Sophie, ran toward me crying.
“Daddy, stop!”
Linda rolled her eyes.
“Don’t make such a scene, sweetheart. Your mother just needs to learn how marriage works.”
Something inside me snapped.
I handed Sophie my phone and told her to go to the kitchen.
Then I turned back and slapped Ryan across the face.
Linda gasped.
Ryan stared at me like he couldn’t believe I had fought back.
“How dare you?”
“No,” I said. “How dare you?”
Linda pointed toward the front door.
“You need to get out of my son’s house until you learn some respect.”
I actually laughed.
Both of them went quiet.
“Your son’s house?”
I walked to the entry table, opened the drawer, and pulled out the folder I kept there.
“I bought this house three years before I married Ryan.”
Linda’s face changed.
“The deed is in my name.”
Ryan stepped toward me.
“Emily, don’t start.”
“And the cars? Mine.”
His mouth opened.
“The business account you’ve both been using? Mine too.”
Linda suddenly looked nervous.
I dropped the folder onto the table.
“You’ve spent years acting like I was lucky to be part of this family.”
Then I looked directly at Ryan.
“But tonight, you hit the woman who owns the roof over your head.”
His phone buzzed on the couch.
Sophie came back holding it.
May you like
“Mom,” she whispered, staring at the screen. “Why is Grandma texting Dad that you can’t find out what they did with your company?”
Ryan’s face went completely white.
