Chapter 1

My husband slapped me across the face in front of his entire family because I refused to apologize to his mother. But what my five-year-old daughter said next made every person at that dinner table stop breathing.
It happened during Sunday dinner at my in-laws’ house outside Dallas.
There were twelve people around the table when my husband, Ethan, leaned toward me and whispered, “Say you’re sorry.”
I stared at him.
“For what?”
His mother, Margaret, slowly put down her fork.
“For embarrassing this family,” she said.
Three days earlier, I had refused to lend Ethan’s younger brother $20,000 from the savings account my late father left me.
Apparently, that made me selfish.
“I already said no,” I replied. “That money is for Chloe.”
Ethan’s brother laughed.
“Your daughter doesn’t need twenty grand.”
I felt Chloe’s little hand tighten around mine beneath the table.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“Are you really going to let your wife speak to us like this?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Claire. Apologize.”
“No.”
The slap came so fast I didn’t even see his hand move.
My head snapped sideways.
Someone gasped.
My cheek started burning.
But nobody stood up.
Nobody told him to stop.
Margaret actually smiled.
“That’s what happens when a wife forgets how to respect her husband.”
I slowly turned back toward Ethan.
“You hit me.”
“Don’t make a scene,” he muttered.
His cousin stared at his plate.
His aunt suddenly became very interested in her wineglass.
And Ethan’s father just kept eating.
That hurt almost worse than the slap.
I pushed my chair back.
“We’re leaving.”
Ethan grabbed my wrist.
“You’re not taking Chloe anywhere.”
Chloe immediately started crying.
“Daddy, stop!”
Margaret stood.
“She stays here tonight.”
I looked around the table and realized they had already discussed this.
Every single one of them knew.
My stomach dropped.
“What did you people plan?”
Ethan squeezed my wrist harder.
Then Chloe climbed down from her chair and ran toward me.
“Mommy, don’t let Daddy lock you downstairs again.”
The room went completely silent.
I stopped breathing.
Ethan released my wrist.
Margaret’s face went pale.
I stared at my daughter.
“What did you just say?”
Chloe pointed toward Margaret with a trembling finger.
“Grandma said if I told you what Daddy did last Thursday, they’d send you away like the other lady.”
I looked at Ethan.
“What other lady?”
Before he could answer, Ethan’s elderly aunt suddenly stood up so fast her chair crashed onto the floor.
She looked directly at me and whispered, “Claire… take your daughter and run.”
May you like
Then she pointed at my husband.
“Because you are not Ethan’s first wife.”
