Chapter 8: My Forged Signature

I put the phone on speaker.

Vanessa went completely still.

“I never applied for that loan,” I said.

Andrew Mills became careful immediately.

“Ms. Carter, can you confirm your full legal name?””

I did.

“And you are the majority owner of Carter Logistics Group?””

“I'm the sole owner.””

Another pause.

“Your husband represented himself as an authorized executive.””

“He isn't.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I continued.

“Do not process anything.””

“I understand.””

“No. I need you to understand that I did not sign those documents.””

Andrew’s voice tightened.

“I’m going to flag the application immediately.””

“When was it submitted?””

“Last Tuesday.””

“And the money?””

“Nothing has been funded.””

Relief hit me so hard I had to sit down.

“Thank God.””

“However…”

My relief vanished.

“What?””

“There was a request for expedited approval.””

“From Bradley?””

“Yes.””

“For when?””

“Monday morning.””

I stared at the wall.

Bradley had planned everything around the weekend.

“Please preserve every document, email, timestamp, and communication associated with that application.””

“I will refer this to our fraud department.””

“Thank you.””

After the call ended, Vanessa whispered, “He forged your signature.””

“Looks that way.””

“What was the loan for?””

I reopened the application.

The stated purpose was business expansion.

But the destination account wasn't one of mine.

I copied the routing information and sent it to Daniel.

He replied almost immediately.

*Checking.*

Vanessa paced.

“Why would he need three hundred fifty thousand?””

“His parents wanted two hundred.””

“That leaves one hundred fifty.””

“Exactly.””

My phone buzzed again.

Daniel.

“The destination account belongs to Carter Development Holdings.””

I frowned.

“Never heard of it.””

“Neither had I.””

“Owner?””

“Still looking.””

Thirty seconds later, another message appeared.

*Found it.*

Then:

*Registered agent: Barbara Carter.*

I stared at the name.

Vanessa whispered, “His mother?””

“Yes.””

Everything rearranged itself in my head.

The weekend wasn't about convincing me to loan them money.

Maybe that had been the cover.

Maybe they had already decided to take it.

I called Bradley.

He answered instantly.

“Maddie?””

“Carter Development Holdings.””

Silence.

I closed my eyes.

“Barbara's company.””

“Maddie, let me explain.””

“Three hundred fifty thousand dollars.””

“Nothing happened yet.””

“Because I stopped it.””

“It wasn't supposed to hurt you.””

I laughed.

“You forged my signature.””

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

“Bradley?””

“My mom handled the paperwork.””

I stood so quickly the chair rolled backward.

“You gave your mother access to my financial documents?””

“She was trying to help.””

“Help who?””

“My family!””

His voice exploded through the speaker.

For the first time, the mask came off.

“I have spent seven years watching you build something while everyone acts like you're some genius. Meanwhile my parents are drowning, Natalie is buried in debt, and I'm supposed to stand there smiling because Madison Carter is successful.””

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

“So you punished me for succeeding?””

“I wanted security.””

“You had security!””

“No, you had security!””

Vanessa looked away.

Bradley continued.

“The house is yours because you paid the down payment. The company is yours. The investments are yours. Everything is always yours.””

“Because I built them!””

“And what did I get?””

“A marriage.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.””

That single word ended something inside me.

I spoke calmly.

“Who forged my signature?””

“Maddie—”

“Who?””

He lowered his voice.

“I signed it.””

There it was.

A confession.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

I looked at my laptop.

The call wasn't being recorded, but it didn't matter.

There were documents.

Emails.

Bank records.

And now he knew I had found them.

“You need to come home,” Bradley said.

“No.””

“We can fix this.””

“There is no ‘we’ anymore.””

“Maddie.””

“Do not enter my office. Do not access my business accounts. Do not contact my employees.””

“You can't order me around.””

“When it comes to my company, I absolutely can.””

I ended the call.

Then I contacted my operations manager, Claire.

She answered sleepily.

“Maddie?””

“I'm sorry it's late.””

“What happened?””

“I need you to disable every building access code associated with Bradley.””

She woke up instantly.

“Done.””

“And tell security he is not authorized to enter any company property.””

“Is there a threat?””

“Financial.””

Claire paused.

“Understood.””

Vanessa picked up her coat.

“You should probably go somewhere Bradley can't find you.””

“I will.””

She moved toward the door.

“Vanessa.””

She turned.

“Why help me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because three days ago Bradley asked me to open a bank account in my name.””

My stomach tightened.

“For what?””

“He said he needed somewhere temporary to move money after the loan funded.””

“How much?””

“He wouldn't tell me.””

“And you refused?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“He got angry.””

She opened the door.

Then she looked back.

“He said if I wouldn't help him, he already had someone who would.””

“Who?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

After she left, I checked the time.

Almost midnight.

Then Daniel called again.

“Maddie, I found another account linked to one of the fake vendors.””

“Whose?””

“That's the strange part.””

“What?””

“The authorized signer isn't Bradley.””

My pulse quickened.

“Who is it?””

Daniel said the name.

And suddenly I understood why Natalie had been so frightened.

“Natalie Carter.””
