Chapter 14: My Mother's Final Choice
At 6:12 the next morning, I entered Corvina headquarters as its majority owner.
Not as Desmond's wife.
Not as Arthur's daughter.
Not as Elaine's orphan.
Mine.
Nathaniel walked beside me.
Gideon followed several steps behind.
Desmond had asked to come.
I refused.
Some doors had to be opened without him.
The executive floor was almost empty.
Nathaniel stopped before the founder's conference room.
"This wall predates the renovation.""
Gideon pointed toward a wooden panel behind the original Corvina emblem.
"There.""
The brass key slid into a nearly invisible lock.
I turned it.
Click.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside sat a metal box.
No fortune.
No diamonds.
No dramatic stacks of cash.
Just documents.
A ledger.
And another recording.
I laughed quietly.
"Of course.""
Nathaniel looked at me.
"What?""
"My mother trusted paper more than people.""
Gideon almost smiled.
"She had reasons.""
We played the recording.
My mother's face appeared.
This time, she wasn't afraid.
She looked angry.
Focused.
Alive.
"Wren," she began, "if you reached this recording, then you know enough of the truth to be dangerous.""
Despite everything, I smiled.
That sounded like her.
"I cannot know what version of Corvina exists when you hear this. Maybe it failed. Maybe it grew.""
Her expression softened.
"Maybe you want nothing to do with it.""
I looked through the glass wall at the company below.
Thousands of people.
Thousands of lives.
"But if you own Corvina," she continued, "then I ask you not to repeat our mistake.""
Gideon lowered his eyes.
"We believed ownership gave us the right to protect the company from consequences.""
My mother's voice became firmer.
"It does not.""
Nathaniel glanced at me.
"Arthur believes secrecy protects family. Alistair believes secrecy protects institutions. Gideon believes secrecy protects truth.""
She shook her head.
"They are all wrong.""
Gideon flinched.
I almost laughed.
Even dead, my mother could silence him.
"Secrets protect themselves.""
My eyes burned.
She lifted a document.
"The royalties from my work will accumulate in a protected trust.""
Nathaniel opened the ledger.
Numbers filled page after page.
"If my daughter eventually controls Corvina, the funds transfer to her authority.""
My pulse quickened.
"But I don't want them used to enrich her.""
I leaned closer.
Of course she didn't.
"I want them used to repair what we damaged.""
The recording listed conditions.
Employee pensions.
Research grants.
Legal protections for whistleblowers.
A fund for employees harmed by executive misconduct.
Independent oversight no majority owner could eliminate alone.
My mother hadn't hidden a fortune for me.
She had hidden a system designed to limit me.
I loved her for it.
Then her expression changed.
"There is one final condition.""
Nathaniel stopped turning pages.
"If the person responsible for harming Arthur is ever identified, Wren must decide what happens next.""
My stomach tightened.
"I hope she chooses accountability.""
A pause.
"Not revenge.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother had known me without knowing the woman I'd become.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Gideon said, "Elaine always did enjoy having the last word.""
I looked at him.
"You're not escaping this either.""
His smile disappeared.
"You admitted fraud. Hidden funds. False death records.""
"I preserved evidence.""
"You also manipulated everyone around you.""
"Probably.""
"Then you'll answer for it.""
He nodded once.
"Fair.""
Nathaniel's phone rang.
He listened.
Then handed it to me.
"It's Desmond.""
I almost refused.
Then answered.
"What?""
"Wren, Isolde is gone.""
I frowned.
"Gone where?""
"I don't know.""
"Why should I care?""
"Because she took the blue folder.""
My blood chilled.
"The original partnership agreement?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
"Police recovered it from my car after questioning me. Legal placed it in evidence review.""
"And Isolde got it?""
"She used an old executive access badge.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
"What does she want?""
"I think I know.""
"Tell me.""
"There's an attachment to the partnership agreement.""
"The ownership option.""
"Yes.""
"And?""
Desmond's voice lowered.
"It doesn't just transfer control after misconduct.""
My stomach tightened.
"What else does it do?""
"It identifies the person who inherits Gideon Mercer's original founder stake.""
I looked at Gideon.
He had gone pale.
"Who?""
May you like
Desmond answered.
"Isolde.""
