Chapter 5

I put Vanessa on speaker.
Daniel went completely still.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa laughed.
It was a strange sound.
Not confident anymore.
Bitter.
“Ask him.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Did your mother hire her?”
“No.”
Vanessa cut in.
“He didn’t know at first.”
“At first?”
“She recruited me.”
“For what?”
“To work with Daniel.”
“You were already coworkers.”
“Not when Margaret found me.”
My head started pounding.
Vanessa continued.
“I worked for a consulting company that was trying to win a contract with Blackwood Holdings.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“You told me you transferred from Memphis.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother paid me to get close to you.”
My mouth went dry.
Daniel whispered, “That’s insane.”
“No, Daniel. What was insane was believing I was the only liar in your family.”
I interrupted.
“Why would Margaret pay you to get close to him?”
“To learn what he was planning.”
“About the company?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
“You got pregnant.”
Silence.
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“When Margaret learned you were pregnant, she panicked.”
“Because of the trust.”
“Yes.”
“She wanted Daniel to leave me before Noah was born.”
“Yes.”
“So she told you to seduce him?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“She told me Daniel was unhappy.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“She said if I became important to him, she could make sure I had a future with him.”
I stared at Daniel.
He looked sick.
Vanessa continued.
“I didn’t think I’d actually fall in love with him.”
Daniel stood.
“Don’t.”
“What?” Vanessa snapped. “You don’t want your wife hearing that part?”
“I never loved you.”
There was silence on the line.
Then Vanessa laughed softly.
“You told me you did.”
“I lied.”
That hurt more than I expected.
Not because I cared about Vanessa’s feelings.
Because Daniel had lied so easily to everyone.
Me.
Her.
Himself.
Vanessa said, “Your mother told me Sarah was temporary.”
I closed my eyes.
“She said once Daniel left you, she would help me start my own company. She gave me money. Introductions. Clients.”
“The investment company.”
“Yes.”
“You stole the money Daniel invested?”
“No.”
“Then where is it?”
Vanessa went quiet.
“Margaret took it.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“What?”
“She controlled the account.”
“You told me the money went into the Brentwood development.”
“It did.”
“Then it failed.”
“No.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“What are you saying?”
“The development made money.”
“How much?”
“Almost two million.”
Daniel gripped the back of the chair.
“And my money?”
“Your mother moved it.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
The automated jail system announced that the call was being recorded.
Vanessa’s voice became urgent.
“Sarah, listen to me.”
“I’m listening.”
“I pushed you.”
Daniel flinched.
I stayed silent.
“I did it,” she repeated.
“Why?”
“I was angry.”
“You nearly killed my son because you were angry?”
“I know.”
“No. You don’t know.”
“I thought Daniel was going to leave me.”
“So you tried to kill me.”
“I didn’t plan it.”
Her voice cracked.
“I swear.”
“You followed me.”
“Yes.”
“You grabbed me.”
“Yes.”
“You pushed me.”
“Yes.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Vanessa started crying.
“I saw your stomach. I thought about everything Margaret had told me. That once the baby came, Daniel would never leave. That you would control the company. That I would lose everything.”
“And then?”
“You turned away.”
I waited.
“And I pushed.”
My chest tightened.
Even though I already knew, hearing her admit it made the room tilt.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because Margaret is trying to make me take all of it.”
“You did it.”
“I pushed you. I didn’t plan everything else.”
“What else?”
The line went quiet.
“Vanessa.”
“Margaret wanted you gone.”
Daniel stepped closer to the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“She asked me questions.”
“What questions?”
“About your schedule.”
My heart started pounding.
“My schedule?”
“When you left home. When you drove alone. Where you parked at work. What gym you used.”
Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”
Vanessa continued.
“I thought she was trying to catch you doing something.”
“But she wasn’t.”
“No.”
“What was she doing?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stop lying.”
“I don’t know!”
The jail recording interrupted again.
One minute remaining.
Vanessa spoke quickly.
“She once asked if you still drove that old SUV.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She asked if the brakes had ever been serviced.”
I remembered three months earlier.
My brakes had failed pulling out of our neighborhood.
I nearly went through an intersection.
The mechanic said a line had been damaged.
He thought maybe road debris caused it.
I had forgotten about it.
Until now.
“Did she touch my car?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel?”
“No.”
The automated voice announced thirty seconds.
Vanessa started talking faster.
“Check Margaret’s storage unit.”
“What storage unit?”
“Belle Meade Self Storage. Unit 214.”
“For what?”
“She keeps things there she doesn’t want Richard to see.”
“What things?”
“I don’t know. Documents. Cash.”
The call cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel looked like he might collapse.
“We need to call Alvarez.”
“I already am.”
I pressed the detective’s number.
Within an hour, the police were working on a warrant.
Richard arrived at the hospital after I called him.
When I told him about the storage unit, he sat down.
“Unit 214?”
“You know it?”
“No.”
“Would Margaret hide things from you?”
His laugh was hollow.
“Apparently she’s been hiding an entire second life.”
Daniel stared at his father.
“Dad, I didn’t know.”
Richard looked at him.
“You knew enough.”
Daniel flinched.
“I know.”
Richard turned away.
It was the first time I had ever seen disappointment from a father actually look heavier than anger.
By late afternoon, Noah was strong enough for me to hold him for the first time.
The nurse carefully placed him against my chest.
I broke.
Everything else disappeared.
Margaret.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Money.
Police.
All of it.
There was only my son.
He weighed barely four pounds.
His tiny face rested against my skin.
“Hi, Noah.”
His fingers opened and closed.
Daniel stood ten feet away.
He didn’t ask to come closer.
I was grateful for that.
After twenty minutes, the nurse returned Noah to the incubator.
I kissed his head.
“I love you.”
Back in my room, Rachel handed me papers.
“What are these?”
“A temporary protective financial order.”
“Against Daniel?”
“Against anyone accessing Noah’s trust or changing guardianship documents while the criminal investigation is active.”
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
“I’ll sign.”
Rachel looked surprised.
“You understand what this means?”
“Yes.”
“You will have no independent authority over Noah’s trust.”
“That’s fine.”
I studied him.
For the first time since the fall, Daniel seemed to understand that protecting Noah mattered more than protecting himself.
He signed.
I signed.
Richard agreed to cooperate.
Then Detective Alvarez called.
They had entered the storage unit.
“What did they find?”
“Records.”
“What records?”
“Financial transfers. Copies of your medical records. Photographs of your house.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
“There are photos of your car.”
My hand shook.
“And?”
“A box containing two prepaid phones.”
“Margaret’s?”
“We’re checking.”
“What else?”
The detective hesitated.
“A printed copy of your life insurance policy.”
I looked at Daniel.
He heard.
His face turned gray.
“How much is my policy?”
“One million dollars.”
I had taken it out after getting pregnant.
Daniel was the beneficiary.
But if Daniel died too, Noah would receive the money through a guardian.
Margaret had suggested the policy.
I suddenly remembered.
She had given us the insurance agent’s number.
My skin crawled.
“What about the brakes?”
“We’re reopening the incident.”
I swallowed hard.
“Detective, do you think Margaret tried to kill me before?”
“I don’t make conclusions before evidence.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“No.”
He paused.
“But I’m concerned.”
The next day, police arrested Margaret for financial crimes.
Not attempted murder.
Not conspiracy.
Not yet.
They had enough evidence that she had moved corporate funds into shell companies.
Richard removed her from Blackwood Holdings immediately.
The news broke within hours.
Reporters gathered outside the hospital.
Blackwood Family Scandal.
Executive’s Wife Accused of Fraud.
Pregnant Daughter-in-Law Injured in Hospital Fall.
Nobody knew the full story.
I wanted it that way.
Then something unexpected happened.
Margaret made bail.
Richard called me.
“She’s out.”
“How?”
“Her attorney arranged it.”
“Can she come here?”
“There’s no restraining order yet.”
I called Rachel immediately.
She filed for one.
But paperwork takes time.
Danger doesn’t.
That evening, Emily stayed in my room while I slept.
Daniel was visiting Noah.
At 2:14 a.m., the hospital fire alarm sounded.
I woke to flashing lights.
Emily sat up.
“What’s happening?”
A nurse rushed in.
“Stay in the room.”
“Is there a fire?”
“We’re checking.”
Then I heard another announcement.
Security alert.
NICU.
I tore the blanket away.
“Noah.”
“Sarah, don’t.”
I forced myself out of bed.
Pain tore through my stomach.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“You can’t walk.”
“I’m going.”
We reached the hallway.
Two security guards ran past us.
Daniel came around the corner.
His face was white.
“Where’s Noah?”
“He’s there.”
“Why is security—”
“I don’t know.”
Then a nurse screamed from inside the NICU.
“Stop her!”
A woman in medical scrubs appeared at the far end of the hall.
She was pushing an infant transport bassinet.
For one second, my brain refused to understand.
Then I saw the pearl earrings.
Margaret.
She was wearing stolen hospital scrubs.
And inside that bassinet was my son.
“NOAH!”
I ran.
My stitches felt like they were tearing open.
Margaret looked back.
Her face twisted.
“Stay away!”
Daniel sprinted past me.
“Mom!”
Margaret pushed the bassinet faster.
A security guard moved to block her.
She reached into her pocket.
For one terrifying second, I thought she had a weapon.
Instead, she pulled out a small canister and sprayed the guard directly in the face.
He screamed.
Daniel caught the bassinet.
Margaret slapped him.
“Let go!”
“That’s my son!”
“I’m protecting him!”
“From who?”
“Her!”
She pointed at me.
I stopped several feet away.
Blood was seeping through my hospital gown where my incision had opened.
Margaret looked wild.
Nothing like the controlled woman I had known.
“He belongs with his family.”
“I am his family.”
“You’re destroying everything.”
“You did that yourself.”
She lunged toward the bassinet again.
Daniel shoved himself between her and Noah.
“No.”
Margaret stared at her son.
“You’re choosing her?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Noah.
“I’m choosing him.”
Security grabbed Margaret from behind.
She screamed.
“You stupid boy! Do you know what she’ll do with those shares?”
Daniel didn’t move.
“They’re his.”
“I built that company!”
“No. Dad did. Grandpa did.”
“I protected this family!”
“You nearly killed my wife.”
Margaret stopped struggling.
The hallway went silent.
Even the guards froze.
Daniel looked at her.
His voice shook.
“You knew Vanessa was dangerous. You paid her. You watched Sarah. You knew about the brakes.”
Margaret’s face changed.
He had guessed.
But her reaction told us something.
She knew exactly what he meant.
Detective Alvarez appeared from the elevator with two officers.
Margaret was handcuffed.
As they took her away, she turned toward me.
“You think you won.”
I held my stomach.
“No.”
I looked at Noah.
“I think he survived.”
Then Margaret smiled.
That same cold smile Vanessa had worn before pushing me.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Ask your husband why he was at the hospital before Vanessa pushed you.”
I turned toward him.
Daniel went pale.
“What is she talking about?”
He didn’t answer.
Margaret laughed as the officers dragged her away.
I stared at my husband.
“Daniel.”
His shoulders dropped.
“Sarah.”
“Why were you at the hospital?”
He looked at the floor.
May you like
And I knew.
There was another secret.
