Chapter 1

My husband’s mistress hit me with her car while I was eight months pregnant—and when he arrived, he protected her instead of me.
I had just left my prenatal appointment in Phoenix when Jessica blocked my path.
She leaned from her car window and smiled.
“Ryan already chose me, Emily.”
I tried to walk around her.
The engine suddenly roared.
Her car surged forward and struck my side.
I was thrown onto the pavement, one arm wrapped around my belly.
A warm stream of blood ran down my leg.
“My baby,” I gasped. “Please help my baby.”
Jessica stepped out but never called 911.
She only stared at me and whispered, “You should’ve signed the divorce papers.”
A security guard ran toward us as Ryan’s truck entered the parking lot.
I thought my husband would save me.
Instead, he rushed past my bleeding body and embraced Jessica.
“She walked in front of my car,” Jessica cried.
“That’s a lie!” I shouted.
Ryan glared down at me.
“Stop blaming Jessica for everything.”
“I’m carrying your daughter!”
He removed his jacket and wrapped it around his mistress’s shaking shoulders.
The pain in my stomach suddenly tightened.
I reached for Ryan’s hand, but he stepped away.
“Don’t touch me.”
An ambulance arrived, and the paramedics placed me on a stretcher.
One of them asked Ryan to ride with me.
“I need to stay with Jessica,” he replied.
The security guard stared at him in disbelief.
Then a police officer approached Jessica’s damaged car.
Ryan immediately moved in front of her.
“My wife is emotional. This was an accident.”
The officer looked toward the clinic entrance.
“We’ll determine that after reviewing the security footage.”
Jessica’s face went pale.
But the guard shook his head and raised Ryan’s fallen phone.
May you like
“You don’t need the cameras.”
He played a recording made minutes before the crash—and Ryan’s voice said, “Hit her hard enough to scare her, but protect the baby.”
