Chapter 11: The Witness Garrett Forgot
Daniel chose a small restaurant far from the city.
No cameras.
No crowds.
No chance of Garrett accidentally finding us.
At least, that was what we hoped.
When he walked in, I immediately understood why Claire trusted his information.
He looked exhausted.
Not nervous.
Exhausted.
Like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for years.
He sat across from us.
“I’m sorry.””
That was the first thing he said.
Not hello.
Not an explanation.
An apology.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
He lowered his eyes.
“For knowing what he was doing and staying quiet.””
The answer surprised me.
Because I expected excuses.
People always had excuses for Garrett.
But Daniel looked like someone who hated himself.
“What did you do for him?”” I asked.
He took a breath.
“I was his financial director.””
Claire opened her notebook.
“Tell us everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Garrett was different when he was younger.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He looked at me.
“He wasn’t always cruel.””
The words bothered me.
Because part of me still remembered the man I fell in love with.
The man who brought me coffee in the morning.
The man who held me when my father died.
Those memories were real.
And that made everything worse.
Daniel continued.
“Garrett learned early that people trusted him because he looked successful.””
“And my father?””
“Your father was one of the few people who didn’t.””
I listened carefully.
“He questioned Garrett’s business practices.””
“What practices?””
“Hidden transfers. Fake valuations. Money being moved between companies.””
My stomach tightened.
“So my father discovered the truth.””
“Yes.””
“And Garrett destroyed him.””
Daniel looked down.
“I helped.””
The confession was quiet.
“How?””
“I signed documents.””
“What documents?””
“Documents that made it appear your father approved certain transactions.””
My hands tightened into fists.
“He was framed.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire leaned forward.
“Why come forward now?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because of your mother.””
I frowned.
“My mother?””
“She found me years ago.””
“What?””
“She asked me for the truth.””
I stared.
“She knew?””
“She suspected.””
“What happened?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Garrett found out.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did he do?””
“He didn’t hurt me.””
Daniel looked away.
“He threatened my family.””
Silence.
Again.
The same pattern.
Fear.
Control.
Manipulation.
Garrett didn’t need violence to destroy people.
He just needed to find what they loved.
“What evidence do you have?”” Claire asked.
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
He placed a small hard drive on the table.
“Everything.””
Claire picked it up.
“You kept copies?””
“I knew one day someone would need them.””
I looked at him.
“Why not use them before?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because I was a coward.””
The honesty was painful.
But understandable.
Not forgivable.
Not yet.
But understandable.
When we left the restaurant, I felt something I hadn’t felt in days.
Hope.
Real hope.
Because Garrett’s version of the story was collapsing.
But as we reached the car, Claire stopped.
“What?””
She looked at her phone.
Her expression changed.
“What happened?””
She turned the screen toward me.
A news article.
A headline.
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN CLAIMS WIFE ATTACKED HIM DURING DOMESTIC INCIDENT*
My heart sank.
“He went public.””
Claire nodded.
“He’s controlling the story.””
I looked at the article.
A photo of Garrett smiling.
A photo chosen carefully.
A photo of a victim.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Garrett.
*“You should have stayed quiet.””*
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
*“Now everyone will know who you really are.””*
I looked at Claire.
She took the phone from my hand.
“Don’t respond.””
“I won’t.””
“Good.””
She handed it back.
“But we need to move faster.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the street.
“Because if Garrett is going public…”
May you like
She paused.
“He’s probably about to reveal the one thing he thinks can destroy you.””
