Chapter 1

My husband hit me again and again with a mop because I refused to sign our house over to his mother. Then his mother walked in holding the document that proved neither of them understood who actually owned it.
My name is Sarah, and I had been married to Michael for nine years.
The house outside Dallas was the one thing my father left me before he died.
Michael knew that.
But his mother, Patricia, had wanted it from the day she moved in with us.
“She’s getting older,” Michael told me one night. “Just put the house in Mom’s name.”
I stared at him.
“You want me to give away my father’s house?”
“It’s just paperwork.”
I refused.
The next morning, Patricia placed transfer documents on the kitchen table.
“Sign them.”
“No.”
Her expression changed immediately.
“You’d choose a dead man’s house over your living family?”
I pushed the papers back toward her.
Then Michael came home early.
His mother whispered something in his ear.
He turned toward me.
“Sign it, Sarah.”
“I said no.”
Michael grabbed the mop leaning beside the refrigerator.
At first, I thought he was only trying to scare me.
Then he swung it into my arm.
“Michael!”
He struck me again as I backed toward the counter.
“Stop being selfish!”
I raised my hands to protect myself while Patricia stood nearby watching.
“Make her understand,” she said coldly.
That hurt almost as much as what Michael was doing.
Then our thirteen-year-old daughter, Lily, appeared at the kitchen doorway.
“Dad, stop!”
Michael froze.
Lily was holding her phone up.
She had recorded everything.
Patricia rushed toward her.
“Give me that phone!”
But Lily ran behind me.
That was when Patricia suddenly smiled and lifted the property-transfer papers.
“It doesn’t matter,” she said. “Michael already took care of everything.”
I looked at my husband.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Then Patricia showed me the signature at the bottom of the page.
May you like
It was my name.
But I had never signed it.
