Chapter 1

My husband handed me divorce papers at our anniversary dinner and said, “I’m finally choosing the woman I actually love.” Then my phone buzzed with a message that made his face go white.

For twelve years, I believed Michael and I had built a good life together in Chicago.

We had a house, two children, and the kind of marriage our friends envied.

On our anniversary, he reserved a private room at my favorite restaurant.

I thought he was planning something romantic.

Instead, he slid a brown envelope across the table.

“What is this?”

“Divorce papers.”

I laughed because I honestly thought he was joking.

Michael didn’t smile.

“I’ve met someone else.”

My hands went cold.

“How long?”

He looked toward the door.

“Long enough.”

Then a woman walked into the room.

I recognized her immediately.

It was my younger sister, Hannah.

I couldn’t breathe.

Hannah sat beside my husband and reached for his hand.

“I’m sorry, Sarah.”

“You’re sorry?”

Michael leaned forward.

“Don’t make a scene.”

I stared at the man who had slept beside me every night while secretly seeing my own sister.

Then he said something even worse.

“The house is in my name, so I need you and the kids gone by Monday.”

Hannah looked down, but she didn’t let go of his hand.

I whispered, “You’re throwing your children out?”

“They’ll adjust.”

That was the moment something inside me changed.

Michael pushed a pen toward me.

“Sign tonight and I’ll give you enough money to start over.”

I didn’t touch it.

Instead, I picked up my phone.

There was a new message from an unknown number.

It contained six screenshots.

Bank transfers.

Hotel reservations.

And one email Michael had sent three months earlier.

The subject line read: “After Sarah signs, we can move the money.”

I looked up slowly.

Michael’s confidence disappeared.

“Who sent you that?”

Before I could answer, another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of Michael kissing a woman.

But the woman wasn’t Hannah.

And beneath the photo were five words that made my sister stand up.

“Ask him who Jessica is.”
