Chapter 12: The Factory at Midnight
“Absolutely not.””
My grandfather snatched the phone from my hand and read the message again.
“Whoever sent this wants you isolated. We are not giving them that opportunity.””
“Richard may know what happened to my mother.””
“He also lied to you for years.””
“He may still be our only lead.””
“Phoebe, look at the photograph. This person has already abducted a man. We are calling the police.””
I nodded.
For once, I wasn't going to confuse courage with recklessness.
Margaret forwarded the message and photograph to the detectives. Within minutes, an investigator called back.
The old Crawford factory was a disused industrial property on the southern edge of Dallas. Crawford Industries had sold it years earlier, but Michael Reeves had maintained a connection to the property through a storage lease.
Police were already investigating the location because of its connection to the missing documents.
The investigator told us not to approach the building.
I agreed.
Then he added something that made the situation more urgent.
A patrol unit had been dispatched to Richard's last known location earlier that evening. It had found his car abandoned near the cemetery, but no sign of him.
If the photograph was genuine, Richard had been taken after leaving the cemetery.
The officers were preparing a coordinated operation.
We would stay at Sterling Enterprises until they had a safe plan.
For the next hour, I sat in the conference room while the legal and security teams worked through the evidence.
The recording from Daniel's office was copied and preserved. Jessica provided a formal statement. The bank confirmed that the twelve-million-dollar transfer remained frozen, pending further legal review.
For the first time, the pieces seemed to be forming a coherent picture.
Richard had created or controlled Northstar's network.
Eleanor had helped him access the trust and concealed the theft of four million dollars.
Michael had maintained the records and moved money between shell companies.
Daniel had tried to use the merger to secure access to additional funds, possibly believing the wedding would persuade me to sign whatever documents he presented.
But one question remained.
Why had my mother died?
And what was in the blue ledger that made everyone willing to risk so much to possess it?
At 10:36 p.m., the investigator called again.
“We have a development,” he said.
“Mr. Reeves contacted someone using a prepaid phone. The call was brief, but our team has identified the location of the device.””
“Where?”” I asked.
“The old Crawford factory.””
Grandpa leaned toward the phone.
“Is Richard there?””
“We can't confirm that yet. Our officers are establishing a perimeter.””
“What about the ledger?””
“We have reason to believe it contains evidence connected to the financial crimes. But our immediate priority is the safety of everyone inside.””
I understood.
I didn't like it, but I understood.
The investigator asked whether I had received any further threats.
“Nothing since the message.””
“Keep your phone available. Do not respond to the sender.””
After the call ended, Grandpa ordered his driver to take us home under security escort.
I refused.
“I want to stay here until we know Richard is safe.””
“You need rest.””
“I'll rest when I know whether another person has been hurt because of this.””
He studied me for a long moment.
Then he sat beside me.
“You sound like your mother.””
I looked down at my hands.
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?””
“No. It's supposed to remind you that she was brave, but she was also human. She made mistakes because she believed she could fix things alone.””
He took a slow breath.
“I don't want you making the same mistake.””
“I won't go to the factory alone.””
“Promise me.””
“I promise.””
At 11:18 p.m., the investigator sent an update.
Officers had entered the factory.
The building was empty.
No Michael Reeves. No Richard Bennett. No blue ledger.
But they had found blood on the floor near the storage area and a broken pair of glasses matching the description of Richard's.
My chest tightened.
“Is he alive?”” I asked when the investigator called.
“We don't know yet. The blood has been collected for testing. We're treating this as a possible kidnapping.””
Grandpa put his arm around my shoulders.
I leaned against him, suddenly too exhausted to stand.
Then another call came in.
Jessica.
“Phoebe, I found the original email from Michael to Daniel.””
“What does it say?””
“He says the ledger contains proof that your mother's death was connected to the Northstar transfers.””
I sat upright.
“Connected how?””
“There's an attachment. A scanned report from the night of the accident.””
“Send it to Margaret.””
“I am. But Phoebe, there's something else.””
“What?””
“The email says Daniel was supposed to meet Michael at the factory tonight. Daniel wasn't just involved in the transfer. He was supposed to collect the ledger.””
My blood ran cold.
“Do the police know?””
“Yes. They're trying to locate him.””
A new message arrived while we were speaking.
This time, it came from Daniel.
**Phoebe, please. I know what you've heard, but you don't understand what really happened to your mother. Michael has the ledger, and Richard is in danger.
Meet me somewhere private. I'll tell you everything.**
I showed Grandpa.
He shook his head immediately.
“Do not answer.””
But before I could put the phone down, Daniel sent another message.
*Your mother didn't die because of Richard. She died because Eleanor betrayed her. And Charles helped cover it up.*
I stared at the screen.
Grandpa read it over my shoulder.
“It's a lie,” he said.
“Is it?””
He turned toward me.
“I told you I paid Richard to disappear. I have never claimed I handled everything correctly. But I did not arrange Evelyn's death.””
“Then what happened that night?””
His face tightened.
“I don't know.””
“Daniel seems to think he does.””
“Daniel is trying to manipulate you into meeting him.””
“Maybe. But if he knows something about Mom—”
“Then he can tell the police.””
I wanted to agree.
I really did.
But I could still hear my mother's words from the letter.
Love does not make a person incapable of making terrible decisions.
My grandfather had hidden the payment to Richard. Eleanor had hidden the stolen money. Richard had disappeared. Daniel had built an entire relationship around lies.
Everyone had a reason to conceal the truth.
And I was running out of people I could trust.
At 11:47 p.m., the investigator called with another update.
A traffic camera had captured Michael Reeves leaving the factory in a dark SUV.
The vehicle was registered to a company connected to Northstar Holdings.
A second camera had captured Daniel's car traveling behind it.
Both vehicles were heading toward an abandoned private airfield outside Dallas.
Grandpa stood.
“Tell the officers we can provide aerial property records and access to our regional security network.””
The investigator agreed to coordinate with the appropriate authorities.
Then he asked me a question.
“Miss Bennett, did Mr. Crawford mention anything about an aircraft?””
I remembered Daniel's strange fascination with private aviation. He had once taken me to a hangar and told me that one day, when his company was stable, we'd fly wherever we wanted without worrying about schedules.
At the time, it had sounded romantic.
Now it sounded like an escape plan.
“He talked about private flights,” I said.
“But I don't know whether he owns an aircraft.””
“That's helpful. We'll investigate.””
After the call, I turned toward Grandpa.
“If Daniel is planning to leave the country, he might take the ledger with him.””
“The police are moving as quickly as they can.””
“And if he escapes?””
“Then we'll find him.””
I looked at the ring box on the table.
The tiny key inside it was the only thing my mother had managed to leave behind.
I closed my fingers around it.
“I want to hear the truth from Daniel himself.””
Grandpa shook his head.
“You may never get an honest answer from him.””
“Then I'll listen to what he says and compare it with the evidence.””
He studied me, then nodded reluctantly.
“Only with the police present.””
At 12:06 a.m., the investigator called again.
They had located the SUV at the airfield.
Michael Reeves was in custody.
The aircraft was still on the ground.
But Daniel was nowhere to be found.
And when officers searched the hangar, they discovered something that changed the entire investigation.
A sealed envelope addressed to me.
Inside was a photograph of my mother sitting in the driver's seat of her car on the night she died.

On the back, someone had written a single sentence.
*Your mother was alive when Charles Sterling arrived. Ask him what happened in the next eleven minutes.*
