Chapter 1

My four-year-old daughter was screaming, “Daddy, please help me!” while my wife dragged her across the floor by her hair in front of everyone at her own birthday party. When I reached them, I grabbed my little girl into my arms—and then turned to the woman I had trusted to protect her.
It was supposed to be Lily’s happiest day.
Our backyard outside Nashville was filled with balloons, cake, and nearly thirty relatives and friends.
I had stepped inside for less than five minutes to answer a work call.
Then I heard screaming.
Not excited birthday screaming.
Terrified screaming.
“DADDY!”
I ran back outside.
My wife, Vanessa, had Lily by the hair and was dragging her away from the gift table.
My daughter’s knees scraped across the grass as she cried and tried to hold onto Vanessa’s wrist.
“Please stop! Daddy!”
Everyone around them had frozen.
I dropped my phone and ran.
“LET HER GO!”
Vanessa turned toward me.
“She needs to learn some respect!”
I ripped her hand away from Lily and immediately lifted my daughter into my arms.
Lily buried her face against my chest.
“She pulled my hair because I opened Grandma’s present.”
My whole body started shaking.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You did this because she opened a birthday gift?”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“She’s spoiled because you let her do whatever she wants.”
“You dragged a four-year-old across her own birthday party.”
Vanessa stepped toward me.
“Don’t you dare embarrass me in front of everyone.”
Something inside me snapped.
When she reached toward Lily again, I pushed her hand away and slapped her across the face.
Vanessa stumbled and fell beside the gift table.
The entire party went silent.
My mother rushed over and took Lily from my arms.
Vanessa touched her cheek.
“You hit me?”
“You hurt my daughter.”
“She is not your only family!”
I froze.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
My sister suddenly whispered, “Vanessa, don’t.”
I looked at her.
“Why do you know what she’s talking about?”
Nobody answered.
Then Lily pointed toward Vanessa’s purse lying beside the overturned chair.
“Daddy, that’s where Vanessa keeps the pictures.”
Vanessa jumped up.
“Lily, be quiet.”
I reached the purse before she did.
Inside was an envelope filled with photographs of Vanessa meeting a man I had never seen before.
There were also copies of Lily’s birth certificate and documents from my late wife’s estate.
My stomach dropped.
“What are you doing with these?”
Vanessa started crying.
But my mother looked terrified.
I pulled out one final document.
It was a petition involving custody of Lily—and beneath Vanessa’s signature was another name.
The stranger from the photographs.
I stared at my wife.
“Who is this man?”
May you like
Vanessa said nothing.
Then my mother took one look at the photograph and whispered, “Because he’s the man who has been trying to prove Lily is his daughter.”
