Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Smile

Daniel stared at the note for nearly a minute.

He didn’t blink.

He didn’t speak.

He just held the old piece of paper like it might disappear.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

His voice was quiet.

“It was behind my childhood photo.””

I sat beside him.

“Do you remember writing it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily’s bedroom.

And I knew he was thinking the same thing.

How many things had happened inside that house that nobody knew about?

The next morning, Daniel drove to his parents’ house.

I wanted to go with him.

But he asked me to stay with Lily.

“I need to do this alone.””

Before he left, Lily hugged him.

“Daddy?””

He kneeled.

“Yes?””

“Are you mad at Grandma?””

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“I’m mad that she hurt you.””

Lily whispered.

“Don’t let her be alone with me again.””

Those words followed him out the door.

When Daniel arrived, Margaret opened the door with a smile.

Almost like nothing happened.

“Finally,” she said.

“I was wondering when you would apologize.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Apologize?””

“For embarrassing us.””

His jaw tightened.

“You hurt Lily.””

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“She needs discipline.””

“She’s four.””

“She’s becoming spoiled.””

Daniel stepped inside.

“Did you ever do this to me?””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

“What are you talking about?””

“You heard me.””

Margaret crossed her arms.

“You always had a dramatic imagination.””

Then Robert appeared behind her.

“Daniel, enough.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“Did you know?””

Robert said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Daniel’s face fell.

“You knew.””

Robert looked away.

“Your mother was strict.””

“Strict?””

Daniel laughed once.

A painful sound.

“She made our daughter afraid to speak.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“And your wife made you weak.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

“My wife made me realize what a father is supposed to do.””

For the first time, Margaret looked uncertain.

Because Daniel was no longer arguing like a son.

He was speaking like a parent.

Then Robert sighed.

“You don’t understand your mother.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then explain.””

Robert opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

That was when Daniel noticed something on the hallway table.

A small wooden box.

Inside were old family papers.

He picked it up.

Margaret immediately moved forward.

“Don’t touch that.””

Daniel froze.

Because her reaction was too fast.

Too afraid.

“What’s inside?””

“Nothing.””

But Daniel opened it.

Inside were old letters.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Daniel as a child.

Standing in the same dining room.

With a bowl in front of him.

On the back of the photo was a date.

And underneath it, six words.

*“He promised never to tell.””*

Daniel’s hands started shaking.

Because suddenly he remembered something from thirty years ago.

A memory he had buried.

A memory his mother had forced him to forget.

He looked at Margaret.

“Mom…”

She went pale.

“You remember?””

Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.

And for the first time in decades, Margaret looked afraid.

Because her son finally remembered the secret she had spent years hiding.

And it wasn’t just about Lily.

It was about him.
