Chapter 1
My five-year-old daughter was screaming on the floor while my mother-in-law dragged her by the hair in front of twenty birthday guests. I didn’t think—I ran straight at her.
It happened during Patricia’s 68th birthday party at her house outside Phoenix.
My husband, Daniel, was outside with his brothers near the grill.
I was in the kitchen cutting cake when I heard my daughter Lily cry.
“Grandma, please stop!”
I dropped the knife and ran into the living room.
Lily was on the hardwood floor, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
Patricia had one hand tangled in my daughter’s hair.
“What are you doing?” I screamed.
Patricia kept pulling her toward the hallway.
“She ruined my birthday!”
I rushed forward and grabbed her wrist.
“Let go of my child!”
“She knocked over my gift table!”
“She’s five!”
Patricia shoved me away.
Then she reached for Lily again.
That was when I lost control.
I pushed myself between them and slapped Patricia’s hand away.
She grabbed my hair.
I grabbed hers.
Within seconds, we were struggling in front of the entire family.
Guests started shouting.
Someone knocked over the birthday cake.
Lily crawled beneath a chair, sobbing.
Then Daniel ran inside.
“What the hell is happening?”
Patricia immediately released me and burst into tears.
“She attacked me!”
I stared at my husband in disbelief.
“She was dragging Lily across the floor by her hair!”
Patricia pointed at our daughter.
“That spoiled little girl destroyed my expensive crystal centerpiece.”
“It was an accident,” Lily cried.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Then at me.
For one horrible second, I thought he was going to defend her.
Patricia covered her face and whispered, “Your wife has always hated me.”
Then my sister-in-law Emily stood up from the couch.
“No, Patricia.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Emily slowly lifted her phone.
“I recorded the whole thing.”
Patricia’s face changed instantly.
But Emily wasn’t looking at the video anymore.
