Chapter 14: The Last Signature
Airfield 17B looked abandoned from the highway.
It wasn't.
A white private jet sat at the end of the runway with its lights on.
Marcus had chosen the perfect place.
No commercial terminal.
No crowds.
No witnesses he knew about.
I drove through the gate alone.
At least, that was what he was supposed to believe.
The ledger sat inside a black case on the passenger seat.
The real paper ledger had been removed from Sarah’s headstone less than an hour earlier.
Brooks had photographed every page.
The original was with me.
Agents were positioned beyond the property.
But Marcus had made one thing clear.
If he saw police before Emma was beside me, the plane would leave.
I parked fifty yards from the jet.
Marcus stepped down.
He held Emma’s hand.
My daughter saw me.
“Daddy!””
She tried to run.
Marcus tightened his grip.
“Easy.””
“Let her go.””
“Bring the case.””
I lifted it.
“First Emma.””
Marcus smiled.
“You still think you're negotiating.””
He looked exhausted.
His suit was wrinkled.
There was blood on his collar.
But his eyes were frighteningly calm.
A folding table stood beside the plane.
Documents waited on it.
“Sign.””
“Let Emma walk to me.””
“Ledger first.””
I opened the case.
Sarah’s handwritten ledger lay inside.
For the first time, Marcus lost control of his expression.
He wanted it desperately.
“Sarah kept everything,” I said.
“She should have minded her own business.””
“She was protecting us.””
“She destroyed everything.””
“You killed her.””
Marcus stared at me.
“I didn't drive the truck.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Emma looked between us.
“Daddy?””
I softened my voice.
“I'm okay, sweetheart.””
Marcus pointed at the papers.
“Sign.””
I walked to the table.
The first document surrendered all disputed ownership claims.
The second approved Westbridge.
The third transferred Emma’s interest.
I looked at him.
“You planned this for years.””
“I planned to build something.””
“With stolen money.””
“Every fortune starts with someone taking a risk.””
“Sarah was the risk?””
His jaw tightened.
“She wouldn't stop.””
There.
Not a confession.
But close.
I picked up the pen.
Marcus relaxed slightly.
“Good.””
“Emma comes here.””
“After.””
“No.””
I dropped the pen.
“Then burn the ledger. Kill your deal. Lose everything.””
His face hardened.
“You think I won't get on that plane?””
“Without my signature, you’re running with a kidnapped child and a pile of forged documents.””
Marcus looked at Emma.
Then back at me.
Finally, he released her hand.
“Go.””
Emma ran.
I dropped to my knees.
She slammed into me.
“Daddy!””
I wrapped both arms around her.
“You're okay.””
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
Marcus shouted, “Sign!””
I whispered into Emma’s ear.
“Run to my car and lock the doors.””
She hesitated.
“Go.””
Emma ran.
Marcus watched until she reached the car.
Then he pointed at the table.
“Now.””
I stood.
“You made one mistake.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You changed Emma’s birthday.””
“So?””
“You activated Sarah’s trust.””
His face went still.
“And by kidnapping Emma to force a transfer, you triggered the coercion clause.””
For the first time, Marcus looked confused.
“What clause?””
“Sarah never trusted you.””
His eyes widened.
I smiled without humor.
“Neither did her lawyer.””
Marcus grabbed the documents.
He scanned them.
Then he realized those weren't the trust documents.
They were copies Brooks had prepared.
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
His hand went inside his jacket.
“Federal agents!”” Brooks shouted.
Floodlights exploded across the runway.
Marcus pulled a handgun.
Everything happened at once.
Agents shouted.
I ducked behind the table.
Marcus fired toward the lights.
The shot cracked across the airfield.
Emma screamed from the car.
“Daddy!””
Marcus ran toward the jet.
Cole tackled him near the stairs.
The gun slid across the pavement.
Marcus punched him.
Brooks rushed in.
Two agents forced Marcus down.
He screamed like a man watching his entire life collapse.
“You have nothing!””
Brooks cuffed him.
“We have the ledger.””
“It proves nothing!””
“We have Peter.””
Marcus stopped fighting.
Brooks leaned closer.
“Peter started talking forty minutes ago.””
His face changed.
“And Richard Reed is talking too.””
“No.””
“Blackridge records. Thomas Vane. Sarah’s files.
Emma’s trust. All of it.””
Marcus looked at me.
Hatred filled his eyes.
“You did this.””
I walked toward him.
“No.””
I looked at my daughter behind the windshield.
“Sarah did.””
Marcus was dragged toward an unmarked vehicle.
I ran to Emma.
She unlocked the door.
I lifted her into my arms.
“Can we go home?””
“Not to that house tonight.””
“Aunt Rachel’s?””
“Yes.””
She rested her head against my shoulder.
Then she whispered something I almost didn't hear.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Vanessa said Mommy left me something.””
I froze.
“When?””
“Before Uncle Marcus came.””
“What did she say?””
Emma reached into her pink backpack.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Not Vanessa’s handwriting.
Sarah’s.

And beneath my name were four words.
FOR EMMA’S SIXTH BIRTHDAY.
