I kept waiting for Ryan to protect me.
Diane raised the belt.
She struck my arm.
I cried out.
“Ryan, stop her!”
He barely moved.
“You keep provoking her.”
Those words hurt almost more than the belt.
This was my husband.
The man who was supposed to stand beside me.
Yet when I defended myself and grabbed Diane’s wrist, Ryan rushed forward—not to help me, but to protect his mother.
Then the door opened.

Dad.
He had driven from Nashville to surprise me for my birthday.
Instead, he walked into something no father should ever have to see.
He pulled me toward him.
Then he showed Ryan the camera clipped to his jacket.
He had recorded everything.
But Dad had actually come for another reason.
His attorney had discovered something about money my grandmother left me.
Money I never even knew existed.
