Chapter 13: The Final Weapon
The room went completely silent.
Claire’s words remained hanging in the air.
The truth about how his father died.
I looked at Reid.
His face had changed.
The confidence he had shown moments earlier disappeared.
“Mom…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because there was one more memory I had buried.
One more moment I had spent forty-two years trying not to revisit.
Claire’s voice came through the phone.
“Tell him, Wilma.””
I gripped the phone.
“You don’t get to do this.””
A quiet laugh.
“Do what? Tell the truth?””
“You don’t care about the truth.””
“No?””
“No.””
My voice became steadier.
“You care about destroying anything you couldn’t have.””
Silence.
Then Claire spoke softly.
“You always did think you were better than me.””
I closed my eyes.
“No. I thought we were friends.””
That sentence seemed to hurt her more than anger would have.
“You left me behind.””
“I built my company.””
“You built it because of me.””
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
“You helped me once. That does not mean you own my life.””
Claire’s breathing changed.
Then she said:
“Ask Reid what happened to his father.””
The call ended.
Reid stared at me.
“Mom.””
I sat down slowly.
“I need to tell you something.””
He waited.
“When your father left, I was angry.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t.””
The room felt colder.
“Your father did not disappear because he didn’t care.””
Reid frowned.
“Then why?””
I looked down.
“Because he died.””
The words were finally spoken.
Forty-two years of silence.
Forty-two years of carrying a secret.
Reid froze.
“What?””
“He died before you were born.””
His face went pale.
“But you told me he left.””
“I know.””
“Why would you lie?””
The question hurt.
Because I deserved it.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would grow up believing you were abandoned.””
I swallowed.
“Your father was involved in an accident. He was traveling to come back to me.””
Reid stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I received the news alone.””
My voice shook.
“I was pregnant. I had no money. I had a company barely surviving.””
I looked at him.
“And I made a decision.””
“What decision?””
“To give you a life where you weren’t defined by loss.””
Reid looked away.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
“I deserved to know.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“You did.””
A long silence passed.
Then he whispered:
“Why did Claire know?””
That was the question.
The real question.
I looked at Daniel’s documents.
“She was there.””
Reid looked up.
“What?””
I remembered.
The hospital.
The rain outside.
Claire sitting beside me.
Holding my hand.
“You were the first person I called,” I said.
A bitter smile appeared.
“She came to the hospital.””
Reid stared.
“She knew everything?””
“Yes.””
“And she kept it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I looked at the phone.
“Because she was saving it.””
For forty-two years.
Waiting for the perfect moment.
The perfect weapon.
And now she had used it.
The next morning, Claire released a public statement.
Not an accusation.
Something more dangerous.
A story.
She presented herself as the betrayed friend.
The forgotten partner.
The woman who claimed Wilma Carter destroyed her dreams.
News channels repeated the allegations.
Social media exploded.
People who never met me suddenly believed they knew my entire life.
But they didn’t know the woman who slept beside a broken heater in a warehouse.
They didn’t know the woman who worked until her hands bled.
They didn’t know the woman who raised a child alone.
They only knew the story Claire wanted them to know.
That afternoon, Reid walked into my office.
He placed his phone on my desk.
“What is this?””
I looked.
A video.
Reid standing in front of cameras.
My heart stopped.
“What did you do?””
He looked at me.
“What I should have done years ago.””
He pressed play.
The video began.
“My name is Reid Carter.””
His voice was calm.
“My mother spent her entire life protecting me.””
I watched him speak.
About my sacrifices.
About the company.
About the dinner.
About his mistakes.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Claire Whitmore is not exposing a secret. She is using one.””
The video ended.
I looked at my son.
“Why?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because you spent my whole life standing in front of me.””
A pause.
“Now I’m standing in front of you.””
For the first time in weeks, I felt something I thought I had lost.
Hope.
But then Daniel rushed into the office.
“Wilma.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
His face was serious.
“Claire has one final piece of evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Daniel looked at Reid.
“She has a recording.””
My heart sank.
“Of what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Of you and Claire.””
I stood.
“When?””
May you like
“Forty-two years ago.””
And I knew exactly what conversation she had recorded.
