Chapter 11: The Folder in His Office

The next morning, Claire brought the folder.

She placed it on my kitchen table and didn’t sit down.

She looked uncomfortable being there.

And honestly, so did I.

This was the same kitchen where I once packed leftovers for her.

The same place where she used to sit and tell me everything.

Now we were strangers trying to rebuild something that had been broken.

“I found it two nights ago,” Claire said.

“Why didn’t you bring it sooner?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

I nodded.

At least that answer was honest.

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

I looked at the folder.

“Claire, I’m hurt.””

Her eyes lifted.

“But I don’t hate you.””

That seemed to break something inside her.

She sat down slowly.

“I know I don’t deserve that.””

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“You don’t.””

The honesty hurt, but it was necessary.

Then I opened the folder.

The first page was a property evaluation.

My house.

The value.

The land.

The estimated future worth.

I turned the page.

There were notes.

Plans.

Timelines.

And then I saw something that made my hands freeze.

A life insurance document.

I looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

She went pale.

“I don’t know.””

I kept reading.

My name was listed.

Michael’s name appeared in the paperwork.

The date was from months earlier.

Before the dinner.

Before the accusations.

Before everything.

“Claire.””

Her face had lost all color.

“I swear I didn’t know about that.””

I believed her.

Because her reaction looked real.

For the first time in a long time, I saw genuine fear on my daughter’s face.

David arrived thirty minutes later.

When he saw the documents, his expression changed.

“This is serious.””

“What does it mean?”” I asked.

He carefully reviewed the papers.

“I need to verify everything.””

“David.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Tell me the truth.””

He was silent.

Then he said:

“It appears Michael wasn’t just trying to gain financial control.””

My throat tightened.

“What else?””

“He may have been planning for a future where you were no longer able to stop him.””

The room went cold.

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

David looked at her.

“Did Michael ever pressure you about your mother’s health?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did he ever ask about medical information?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””

That sentence broke my heart.

Not because she was cruel.

Because it showed how much she had allowed herself to ignore.

David gathered the documents.

“We need to make copies of everything.””

Claire stood.

“Mom.””

I looked at her.

“I’m going to help.””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because part of me wanted to believe her.

Another part was afraid.

Trust had become something fragile.

Something I couldn’t hand out freely anymore.

That night, I locked every door.

Not because I was afraid of Michael physically.

Because I finally understood how far someone could go when they convinced themselves they deserved something.

Around midnight, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Margaret?””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t know me, but I know what Michael has been doing.””

I sat up.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Robert.””

I waited.

“Robert what?””

There was silence.

Then he said:

“Robert Hayes.””

The name meant nothing.

Until he continued.

“I used to work with your husband.””

My heart stopped.

“My husband?””

“Yes.””

The room felt suddenly smaller.

“What does this have to do with Michael?””

Robert’s voice lowered.

“Everything.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

He took a breath.

“Your husband discovered something before he died.””

I froze.

“Discovered what?””

A long pause followed.

Then Robert said:

“The reason Michael became close to your family was never an accident.””
