Chapter 6: The False Records

Principal Davis slowly placed the report back on the desk.

The room felt heavier.

“Mrs. Hart,” he said, “did you write this?””

She crossed her arms.

“I write many reports.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

She looked away.

Mr. Hart watched her silently.

The principal picked up another page.

“This says Logan pushed another student during recess.””

Logan’s face changed.

“I didn’t.””

Noah immediately looked at him.

“Logan?””

The boy shook his head.

“I never pushed anyone.””

Mrs. Hart sighed.

“Children don’t always remember their actions.””

That sentence made Emma step forward.

“He didn’t push anyone.””

Everyone looked at her.

Emma swallowed.

“I was there.””

Principal Davis looked at her.

“What happened?””

Emma looked at Mrs. Hart.

Then answered.

“A boy bumped into Logan while they were running. They both fell.””

“Was anyone hurt?””

“No.””

“Did Logan apologize?””

“Yes.””

Principal Davis looked back at the report.

The words on the paper suddenly looked different.

Not like a mistake.

Like a story someone created.

“How many reports like this exist?”” he asked.

Mrs. Hart didn’t answer.

Mr. Hart did.

“More than ten.””

Mrs. Hart turned sharply.

“Stop talking.””

Mr. Hart’s voice became firm.

“No.””

For the first time, Noah saw someone stand up to her without fear.

“I covered for you because I thought you were stressed. I thought you needed help.””

Mrs. Hart’s eyes filled with anger.

“You promised you wouldn’t tell anyone.””

“I promised to support my wife.””

Mr. Hart looked at the documents.

“I never promised to help you hurt children.””

Nobody spoke.

Principal Davis picked up the folder.

“Where did you get these?””

Mr. Hart hesitated.

“Her computer.””

Mrs. Hart’s face changed.

“You went through my things?””

“I saw the files open.””

He looked at the floor.

“I saw names.””

He looked at Logan.

“And I realized I had ignored signs for too long.””

Logan moved closer to Noah.

The boy looked smaller than ever.

Principal Davis noticed.

He softened his voice.

“Logan, can I ask you something?””

Logan nodded.

“Has Mrs. Hart ever punished you before today?””

The child hesitated.

Then slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

“I don’t know.””

“Can you tell me what happened?””

Logan looked afraid.

Noah gently touched his shoulder.

“You can tell the truth.””

Logan took a deep breath.

“She said nobody likes children who cause problems.””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

Principal Davis looked angry, but controlled.

“Did she ever tell you not to tell your parents?””

Logan nodded.

“She said they would think I was bad too.””

The room went silent.

Mrs. Hart looked down.

For the first time, she had nothing to say.

Principal Davis gathered the papers.

“Mrs. Hart, you will not return to the classroom while this investigation continues.””

She looked up.

“You’re suspending me?””

“I’m protecting the students.””

The words hit harder than any punishment.

Mrs. Hart stood.

“This is because of a seven-year-old boy?””

Principal Davis looked at her.

“No.””

He glanced at Noah.

“Because several children were afraid to speak.””

Mrs. Hart looked toward Noah.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Something else.

Something Noah couldn’t understand.

Before she left, she stopped at the doorway.

“You think this is over.””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Principal Davis.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

Then she walked away.

Later that evening, Principal Davis stayed in his office reviewing every report.

The false records.

The camera footage.

The complaints.

Then he found something hidden in the school database.

A file Mrs. Hart had never mentioned.

A complaint from a parent months earlier.

A complaint about the exact same thing.

But it had been marked:

“Resolved.””

Principal Davis opened it.

His eyes widened.

Because the parent who reported Mrs. Hart…

Was Logan’s mother.

And someone had signed the document closing the complaint.

Someone who had no authority to do so.

May you like

Someone whose name appeared at the bottom of the page.

Mr. Hart.
