Chapter 11: My Father’s Money

Nobody spoke.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

My father had spent the last years of his life complaining about grocery prices and refusing to replace a fifteen-year-old pickup truck.

He had given Sarah two hundred thousand dollars.

And I had never known.

“When?”” I asked.

Sarah wiped her face.

“Over several years.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to help Emily.””

I looked at Emily.

She looked as shocked as I felt.

“Help her how?””

“College. A future house. Whatever she needed.””

Emily shook her head.

“I never got two hundred thousand dollars.””

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

Sarah stared at the table.

That silence was becoming familiar.

“Sarah.””

“I used some of it.””

“How much?””

“Most.””

Emily stepped back.

“For what?””

“Life.””

One word.

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“What does that mean?””

“Bills. Your father helped when things were difficult.””

“What difficult things?””

Sarah suddenly became angry.

“Do you remember when you were laid off?””

“For four months.””

“We had bills.””

“I had severance.””

“It wasn’t enough.””

“It was.””

She looked away.

I remembered that period clearly.

We had tightened our budget.

Canceled a vacation.

Stopped eating out.

But we had never missed a mortgage payment.

Never struggled for groceries.

“What else?””

Sarah’s shoulders sagged.

“I helped my sister.””

I stared at her.

“Rachel?””

“She was losing her house.””

“How much?””

“Forty thousand.””

“You gave forty thousand dollars of my father’s money to Rachel?””

“He said I could use it for family.””

“Emily was the family he meant!””

Emily whispered, “Dad.””

I looked at her.

The word grounded me.

Sarah continued.

“I also paid off some credit cards.””

“How much?””

“About thirty.””

“Thirty thousand?””

She nodded.

“And the rest?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

I laughed.

“You lost track of one hundred thirty thousand dollars?””

“It was over years!””

David spoke from the phone.

“Ask her about the account.””

Sarah froze.

I looked down at the phone.

“What account?””

“The one Dad created with her.””

Sarah stood again.

“David, enough.””

“No,” I said.

“Not enough.””

David continued.

“Dad opened a separate account. Sarah was listed as custodian.””

“For Emily?””

“That’s what Michael told me.””

Emily stared at her mother.

“Is that true?””

Sarah whispered, “Yes.””

“How much was in it?””

“At the highest point…”

She stopped.

“How much?””

“Two hundred forty thousand.””

Emily sat down hard.

Noah immediately moved beside her.

I felt sick.

“You said Dad gave you two hundred.””

“He did. There was interest. Some investments grew.””

Emily stared at Sarah.

“That was for me?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Sarah’s voice broke.

“Gone.””

Emily looked like she had been slapped.

“All of it?””

“Not all at once.””

“Stop saying things like that!””

Emily stood again.

“Where is my money?””

Sarah cried.

“I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

“I invested some. I helped people. I paid expenses.””

“Did you give Michael any?””

Sarah said nothing.

Emily’s face twisted.

“You gave him my money?””

“Years ago, only a little.””

“How much is a little?””

“Fifteen thousand.””

Emily backed away.

I closed my eyes.

This wasn’t about a wedding anymore.

It hadn’t been for a long time.

Michael’s return had simply pulled a thread.

Now twenty years of secrets were unraveling.

David spoke.

“That’s why I contacted Michael after Sarah called me six months ago.””

I frowned.

“Explain.””

“He told me about the old account years back. When Sarah suddenly wanted information about your inheritance, I realized something was wrong.””

“So you contacted the man who had already borrowed thirty thousand from you?””

“I thought I could pressure him.””

“With my banking information?””

“I never gave him passwords.””

“You gave him enough to know where to look.””

“I made a mistake.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You people seem to specialize in those.””

David went quiet.

Then he said, “I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Emily was still staring at Sarah.

“Grandpa left that money for me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“At first because you were young.””

“I’m twenty-seven.””

“I kept thinking I could rebuild it.””

“With James’s money?””

Sarah began sobbing.

“Yes.””

There it was.

The entire ugly circle.

My father gave Sarah money for Emily.

Sarah spent it.

Michael returned.

Sarah lost more money in his fake investment.

Then she tried to replace what she had lost by taking from my investment account.

Michael discovered the account.

And once he had access, he tried to take more.

Every lie existed to cover the lie before it.

Emily looked at me.

“Did Grandpa ever tell you?””

“Never.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she turned to Sarah.

“Why would he hide it from Dad?””

Sarah looked terrified.

I noticed immediately.

“So there’s another reason.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“James, please.””

“Why did my father give you money secretly?””

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“He didn’t trust you with it.””

I almost laughed.

“My father trusted me with his estate.””

“It wasn’t about money.””

“Then what?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“He was afraid you would leave.””

The room became still.

“Leave whom?””

She looked at Emily.

My stomach dropped.

“Why would my father think I would leave Emily?””

Sarah’s lips trembled.

David said my name through the speaker.

“James.””

I ignored him.

“Sarah?””

She looked at me.

“Your father knew something about Emily.””

Emily went pale.

Noah gripped her hand.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

Sarah couldn’t answer.

May you like

David did.

“James, Dad suspected Emily wasn’t Michael’s biological daughter.””
