Chapter 1: Behind the Bridal Suite Door
I had been searching for Lily for almost ten minutes when I heard my daughter cry.
Not the dramatic little whine she used when she wanted another scoop of ice cream.
This was different.
This was the sound she made when she was trying not to let anyone hear her.
I stopped in the middle of the hotel hallway.
“Lily?””
Nothing.
Then came another muffled sob.
It was coming from the bridal suite.
My stomach tightened.
The ceremony was supposed to begin in less than fifteen minutes. Downstairs, nearly a hundred guests were waiting beneath white roses and strings of warm lights.
My phone buzzed again.
My best man, Marcus.
Where are you? Pastor says five minutes.
I ignored it.
I moved toward the bridal suite.
Then I heard Vanessa.
“I told you not to touch anything.””
Her voice was low and sharp.
Lily whimpered.
“I just wanted to see—”
A ripping sound cut her off.
I froze.
Through the narrow opening between the door and frame, I could see part of the room.
Vanessa stood beside the velvet couch in her wedding gown.
And Lily was in front of her.
My daughter’s pink princess dress—the one she had spent three weeks talking about—was clenched in Vanessa’s hands.
Vanessa pulled.
The skirt tore down the side.
“No!””
Lily lunged for it.
Vanessa grabbed her hair.
My daughter screamed.
Vanessa jerked Lily’s head backward and leaned close.
“Don’t you dare walk down that aisle with me.””
Lily’s face crumpled.
“But Daddy said I could.””
“I don’t care what your daddy said.””
Vanessa released her and threw the ruined dress onto the couch.
“You’re not standing beside me looking like some ridiculous little doll and ruining my wedding pictures.””
Everything inside me went silent.
For nearly two years, I had believed Vanessa loved my daughter.
She helped pack Lily’s lunches.
She bought birthday presents.
She sat beside her during movies.
Whenever Lily climbed into my lap, Vanessa smiled.
At least, she smiled when I was watching.
I slammed the door open.
It struck the wall.
Vanessa spun around.
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy!””
I crossed the room and dropped to my knees.
She ran into my arms.
Her whole body trembled.
I held her against my chest.
“I’ve got you.””
She buried her face beneath my chin.
“Daddy, my dress…”
“I know, sweetheart.””
I looked at her scalp.
There were angry red marks where Vanessa had grabbed her.
Something dark and unfamiliar moved through me.
I stood with Lily in my arms.
“Did you do this to her?””
Vanessa stared at me.
For one second, fear flashed across her face.
Then irritation replaced it.
“Oh, Ryan, please. Calm down.””
“Did you pull my daughter’s hair?””
“She was being difficult.””
Lily tightened her arms around my neck.
Vanessa noticed.
Her expression hardened.
“She came in here after I specifically told everyone I needed privacy. She touched my veil. She touched my makeup. Then she started throwing a tantrum.””
“I didn't,” Lily whispered.
Vanessa pointed at her.
“See? She constantly interrupts adults.””
“Stop pointing at her.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“I said stop pointing at my daughter.””
Silence filled the room.
Vanessa lowered her hand.
Then she laughed nervously.
“Ryan, we're both stressed. We’re about to get married.””
“No.””
Her smile disappeared.
“What do you mean, no?””
I picked up Lily’s torn dress.
One side of the skirt hung loose.
Vanessa stepped toward me.
“We have ninety people downstairs.””
“I don't care.””
“My parents spent forty thousand dollars on today.””
“I don't care.””
Her face changed.
“Ryan.””
I looked directly at her.
“There isn't going to be a wedding.””
Vanessa went pale.
“You're joking.””
I carried Lily toward the door.
Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.
“Don't humiliate me over one stupid dress.””
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked at her hand.
She released me.
“The dress isn't why I'm leaving.””
“Then what is?””
“The woman I was going to marry just put her hands on my six-year-old daughter.””
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I walked into the hallway.
Lily remained silent until we reached the elevator.
Then she whispered something against my shoulder.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Please don't make Vanessa mad.””
I looked at her.
Her eyes were terrified.
Not upset.
Terrified.
“Why would you say that?””
Lily stared at the elevator floor.
Her fingers twisted my collar.

Then she whispered four words that made my blood run cold.
“Because she always comes back.””
