Chapter 1: The Woman Beside the Highway
“Adrian, slow down.””
Vanessa’s voice cut through the quiet luxury of the Range Rover.
I almost ignored her.
The highway stretched ahead beneath the late afternoon sun, the city skyline fading behind us as we drove toward Bellmere Hills. I was focused on the road, on the future I thought I had finally rebuilt.
A new engagement ring.
A new beginning.
A life without the pain of my failed marriage.
Then Vanessa leaned forward and gripped the dashboard.
“Wait…”
Her voice changed.
“Is that Claire?””
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
For a second, I thought I had heard her wrong.
Claire?
That name belonged to a chapter of my life I had buried.
A year earlier, Claire Bennett had been my wife.
The woman who had promised to stand beside me forever.
The woman I had trusted more than anyone.
The woman I believed had betrayed me.
I pressed the brakes.
The tires screeched against the pavement as the Range Rover pulled onto the shoulder. Dust rolled around the vehicle, covering the windows with a thin golden cloud.
Then I saw her.
Claire.
Standing beside the highway.
But she wasn’t the Claire I remembered.
The woman who once walked through our mansion wearing silk dresses and elegant jewelry was gone.
This woman looked like she had been fighting just to survive.
Her sweater was faded and oversized.
Her jeans were stained.
Her shoes were so worn that I could see the shape of her feet pressing against the thin material.
Her brown hair was tied into a loose knot, with strands falling around her exhausted face.
Beside her was a plastic bag filled with crushed cans and empty bottles.
She wasn’t traveling.
She wasn’t shopping.
She was collecting recycling.
Trying to make enough money to live.
My chest tightened.
But then I noticed what she was carrying.
Two babies.
Twins.
One baby was strapped against her chest.
The other rested against her side inside a worn carrier.
My mind went completely blank.
Claire had never mentioned children.
Not once.
Vanessa lowered the window.
A small smile appeared on her lips.
“Well,” she said softly, “I guess life finally caught up with her.””
“Vanessa.””
I warned her.
But she ignored me.
She reached into her expensive handbag, pulled out a fifty-dollar bill, crumpled it in her hand, and threw it onto the ground.
“For diapers,” Vanessa called.
“Or formula. Whatever you need.””
The money landed near Claire’s feet.
I expected Claire to scream.
I expected anger.
I expected tears.
Instead, she slowly turned toward us.
Our eyes met.
And something inside me shifted.
Because Claire didn’t look at me with hatred.
She didn’t look like someone who wanted revenge.
She looked at me with sadness.
Almost like she felt sorry for me.
She adjusted the baby against her chest and bent down to pick up her recycling bag.
She left the money untouched.
“Claire.””
The name escaped my mouth before I could stop myself.
She paused.
For a moment, I thought she might come closer.
Instead, she whispered quietly.
“You shouldn’t have stopped.””
Then she walked away.
I reached for the door handle.
Vanessa immediately grabbed my arm.
“Adrian, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“She needs help.””
Vanessa laughed.
“After everything she did?””
My jaw tightened.
“She’s carrying two babies.””
“So?””
I stared at her.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Those babies could belong to anyone.””
The words hit me harder than they should have.
Because almost a year ago, I had believed Claire was capable of anything.
I had believed the evidence.
The missing $140,000 from my private account.
The photographs showing her entering a hotel with another man.
My mother’s diamond necklace disappearing from our safe, only to be found inside Claire’s closet.
Everything had pointed at her.
Everything had told me I had married a stranger.
I remembered the night I confronted her.
Claire stood in our Bellmere home, crying beside the marble staircase.
“Adrian, please believe me.””
Her voice shook.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
I had looked away.
“Then explain everything.””
She stepped closer.
“Vanessa is trying to destroy me.””
At the time, I thought it was desperation.
An excuse.
A lie from someone who had been caught.
But now…
Standing beside the highway.
Watching my ex-wife protect two babies while collecting cans…
I felt something I hadn’t allowed myself to feel for months.
Doubt.
Vanessa squeezed my arm.
“Come on, Adrian. We have dinner reservations.””
I looked through the windshield.
Claire was getting farther away.
The smallest baby lifted his face.
Even from a distance, I saw his eyes.
Dark.
Familiar.
My breathing stopped.
Because suddenly I noticed something I had ignored.
The shape of his forehead.
The curve of his chin.
The way he stared.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
A thought I didn’t want to believe.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you know about those babies?””
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Then she smiled.
“What kind of question is that?””
I kept staring at her.
Because after one year of believing Claire was the villain…
I suddenly wondered if I had been protecting the wrong person all along.
And then Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
The caller’s name appeared.
*Margaret Bennett.*
My dead mother’s old assistant.
The same woman who had handled every financial record during my divorce.
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was silence.
Then Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No… you can’t have that.””
I moved closer.
“Have what?””
She immediately ended the call.
But it was too late.
I had heard the fear in her voice.
And I knew one thing.
May you like
Whatever secret had followed Claire onto that highway…
Vanessa was terrified I would find it.
