Chapter 1

I whispered into the phone, “Dad, please come save me,” while my husband stood in the hallway gripping his belt. Ten minutes later, my father was pounding on our front door—and what happened next exposed the secret my husband had been hiding for years.

It started after dinner when Ryan accused me of embarrassing him in front of his mother.

“I only told her to stop insulting me,” I said.

His face changed.

“You always have to make me look weak.”

I backed toward the kitchen as he pulled off his belt.

“Ryan, don’t.”

The first strike hit my arm.

I screamed and tried to cover myself.

“Please stop!”

He kept coming, shouting that I had ruined his life.

Our six-year-old daughter Emma was upstairs, crying behind her bedroom door.

That terrified me more than anything.

When Ryan turned away for a second, I grabbed my phone from the counter and ran into the laundry room.

My hands shook so badly I almost dropped it.

My father answered on the second ring.

“Claire?”

I could barely speak.

“Dad… please come save me.”

There was silence.

Then his voice became deadly calm.

“Is he hurting you?”

Before I could answer, Ryan slammed his fist against the laundry room door.

“OPEN THIS DOOR!”

My father heard everything.

“I’m coming.”

Ryan kicked the door open and ripped the phone from my hand.

“You called your daddy?”

He laughed.

Then he grabbed my wrist and dragged me back into the living room.

“Let him come.”

Ten minutes later, someone hammered on the front door.

Ryan opened it.

My father stood there, breathing hard, his face pale with rage.

He looked at my bruised arm.

Then he looked at Ryan.

“You touched my daughter?”

Ryan smirked.

“She’s my wife. Stay out of my marriage.”

My father punched him.

Ryan crashed into the wall, then lunged back at him.

The two men slammed into the dining table as I screamed for them to stop.

Emma ran downstairs crying.

“Grandpa!”

My father froze just long enough for Ryan to shove him backward.

Then Ryan yelled, “Tell him the truth, Claire!”

Everything stopped.

My father stared at me.

“What truth?”

Ryan wiped blood from his lip and laughed.

“Ask your precious daughter why she never left me.”

My stomach turned.

“Ryan, shut up.”

But he pointed toward the locked drawer beside our fireplace.

“She knows exactly what’s in there.”

My father walked toward it.

I grabbed his arm.

“Dad, please don’t.”

He looked at me like he didn’t recognize me anymore.

Then Ryan reached into his pocket, tossed a tiny silver key onto the floor, and said the words that made my father go completely still.

“Open it and ask her why your wife’s name is inside.”
