Chapter 1

I watched my employer’s wife push his three-month-old baby into the swimming pool. I saved the child—but when her father arrived, he slapped me instead of asking what happened.
Baby Emma was sleeping in her stroller beside the pool.
Vanessa stood behind it, watching me carry towels inside.
Then she released the brake.
The stroller rolled toward the water.
I screamed and ran.
Vanessa gave it one final push.
The stroller plunged into the pool.
I jumped in without removing my shoes.
Emma was strapped beneath the water.
My hands shook as I freed her and carried her to the surface.
She coughed, then began crying.
That sound was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
I climbed out and held her against my chest.
Vanessa immediately started screaming.
“The maid threw Emma into the pool!”
Her husband, Daniel, rushed from the house.
Before I could speak, he slapped me across the face.
“Get away from my daughter!”
I carefully placed Emma in his arms.
“Your wife pushed her.”
Vanessa burst into tears.
“She’s lying because I planned to fire her.”
Daniel ordered security to lock me inside the pool house.
Through the window, I watched the paramedics examine Emma.
Vanessa stood behind Daniel and smiled at me.
Then I remembered the baby monitor clipped beneath the stroller canopy.
It had recorded everything.
I searched my wet uniform, but the receiver was gone.
Vanessa held it behind her back.
Just as she moved toward the outdoor fireplace, Emma’s eight-year-old brother ran outside.
“Dad, stop her!”
He raised his tablet and played the synchronized recording.
The video showed Vanessa pushing the stroller.

But seconds before she did it, Daniel’s voice came through the monitor.
“Make it look like the maid was responsible, and this time don’t leave any witnesses.”
