Chapter 8

Rachel’s scream brought half the hospital running.
Thomas didn’t scream.
That frightened me more.
He stood beside Eli’s empty bed.
Completely still.
His face looked dead.
Then he turned toward Hale.
“Find my son.”
Hale was already giving orders.
Security cameras.
Exits.
Elevators.
Parking garage.
Every officer nearby.
Rachel clutched the locket so hard the edge cut her palm.
Blood appeared between her fingers.
She didn’t notice.
“Donna took him.”
Hale said, “We don’t know that yet.”
“I know.”
“Rachel—”
“She took him.”
Her knees gave out.
Thomas caught her.
For one second, she let him.
Then grief became rage.
She shoved him away.
“This happened because of your family.”
His face broke.
“I know.”
“Seven years.”
“I know.”
“My mother.”
“I know.”
“My son.”
“I know!”
His voice cracked through the room.
Everyone froze.
Thomas covered his face.
Then he lowered his hands.
His eyes were red.
“I know.”
He looked at Rachel.
“And I will spend whatever is left of my life trying to fix what my family did.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You can’t fix this.”
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“But I can help end it.”
A hospital security officer entered.
“We found footage.”
Hale followed him to the monitor.
The video showed a woman in scrubs pushing a wheelchair.
Eli sat inside.
His head slumped sideways.
Rachel made a broken sound.
“Was he drugged?”
“Possibly.”
The woman’s face stayed turned from the camera.
But when she reached the elevator, she looked up.
Not Donna.
Younger.
Dark hair.
Luis stared at the screen.
“Marisol.”
Everyone turned.
His face was white.
“That’s my daughter.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. She was tied up.”
Luis moved closer.
“That’s her.”
Hale rewound the footage.
The timestamp.
Twenty-two minutes earlier.
Marisol had taken Eli.
Hale pulled out the photograph Donna had sent.
Marisol tied to the chair.
He studied it.
Then he looked at Luis.
“The picture could have been staged.”
Luis shook his head.
“She screamed on the phone.”
“Could have been staged too.”
“No.”
Rachel stared at him.
“Luis.”
He looked devastated.
“I don’t know.”
Thomas’s voice hardened.
“Maybe she’s working with Donna.”
Luis turned on him.
“Don’t say that.”
“Your daughter just kidnapped my son.”
“Thomas.”
“He is my son.”
The words came out before Thomas could stop them.
Rachel looked at him sharply.
He swallowed.
“Our son.”
She didn’t correct him.
Hale asked security to track Marisol’s route.
The camera showed her entering the parking garage.
Then disappearing behind a concrete pillar.
A minute later a dark van exited.
Fake plate.
Of course.
Rachel opened the locket again.
The original picture had been removed.
But something remained beneath the new note.
A thin piece of clear plastic.
“What is this?”
Hale took it.
Luis stared.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
“That’s microfilm.”
Thomas frowned.
“Microfilm?”
Luis nodded.
“Charles used it.”
“For what?”
“Copies of financial ledgers.”
Rachel looked at the locket.
“So Donna put evidence back inside?”
Luis shook his head.
“No.”
“She gave us the locket.”
“No.”
Luis pointed.
“Donna wouldn’t give away evidence.”
He looked at Rachel.
“Someone else returned it.”
The man from the diner.
Robert.
Rachel’s father.
The warning note.
DON’T TRUST THE MAN WHO KNOWS TOO MUCH.
I whispered, “Robert.”
Hale turned.
“What?”
“He took the locket from Donna.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“But if he put microfilm inside…”
Luis nodded.
“He wants us to find something.”
Thomas looked at the tiny strip.
“Can we read it?”
Hale said, “At the station.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No time.”
“Rachel.”
“Donna wants us at midnight.”
Hale checked the clock.
10:41 p.m.
Seventy-nine minutes.
Rachel took Thomas’s hand.
Everyone noticed.
So did she.
But she didn’t let go.
“Take me there.”
Thomas stared at their joined hands.
Then at her.
“I won’t let you go alone.”
“You can’t stop me.”
“I’m not trying to.”
For the first time, they sounded like two people standing on the same side.
Hale arranged an unmarked police response.
Not close enough to scare Donna.
Close enough to move if needed.
At 11:32, we reached the warehouse district.
Rain had started.
The old Fulton warehouse stood beside abandoned loading docks.
Half its windows were broken.
One light burned inside.
Rachel wore a wire.
So did Thomas.
Luis demanded to go.
Hale refused.
Donna had asked for Rachel and Thomas.
Nobody else.
I stayed in the command van with Luis and Hale.
Rachel and Thomas walked toward the warehouse together.
At the door, Rachel stopped.
Thomas looked at her.
“What?”
“If something happens…”
“Don’t.”
“Thomas.”
“No.”
She stared at him.
He stepped closer.
“We already lost seven years.”
His voice shook.
“I’m not spending the next seven minutes talking like you’re going to die.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“You always hated goodbye.”
“I still do.”
A tiny broken smile appeared.
Then they entered.
Inside, the warehouse was nearly dark.
We watched through their body cameras.
An open room.
Old crates.
Rusting equipment.
Then a spotlight snapped on.
Donna stood on a metal platform.
Marisol beside her.
Free.
Untied.
Rachel froze.
Thomas whispered, “You.”
Marisol looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.”
Luis stared at the monitor.
“No.”
His voice collapsed.
“My baby.”
Donna smiled down at Rachel.
“You brought him.”
Rachel looked around.
“Where is Eli?”
Donna tilted her head.
“Where is the recording?”
“I don’t have it.”
Donna’s smile disappeared.
“Then your son is going to have a very bad night.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You touch him—”
“You’ll what?”
Donna laughed.
“Call the police?”
She looked directly at Thomas’s chest.
At the hidden wire.
Then she smiled.
“You never were good at lying.”
Hale cursed.
“She knows.”
Donna reached into her coat and lifted a handheld device.
A scanner.
The warehouse doors slammed shut.
Metal locks dropped into place.
Hale shouted into his radio.
“Move!”
Police vehicles surged forward.
Inside, Rachel screamed, “Where is Eli?”
Donna pointed toward a large glass office on the far side.
A small figure sat on the floor.
Eli.
Alive.
Rachel ran.
A man stepped from the shadows and blocked her.
Steven Markham.
Thomas’s missing CFO.
He held a gun.
“Stop.”
Thomas froze.
Rachel’s hands rose.
“Please.”
Donna came down the stairs.
“Now we finally talk like adults.”
Thomas stared at his sister.
“What do you want?”
“Everything back.”
“What everything?”
“The recording. The microfilm. Every copy Luis made.”
Rachel stared.
“You know about the microfilm.”
Donna’s smile faded.
“Yes.”
“Then Robert is alive.”
That name changed the room.
Donna turned sharply.
“Who told you that?”
Rachel knew.
She smiled for the first time.
“You’re scared of him.”
Donna’s face hardened.
“Your father is a coward.”
Rachel’s knees nearly buckled.
“So he is my father.”
Thomas whispered, “Rachel.”
Donna laughed.
“Everyone is someone’s father tonight.”
Police pounded at the locked warehouse doors.
Steven aimed the gun at Thomas.
“Tell them to back off.”
Thomas shouted toward the wire.
“Hale, back up.”
In the van, Hale looked furious.
But he gave the order.
The pounding stopped.
Donna relaxed slightly.
“Good.”
Rachel stared at Eli behind the glass.
He looked weak.
“Let him come to me.”
“No.”
“He has asthma.”
“I know.”
“Donna.”
“I know exactly what he needs.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“You have his inhaler.”
Donna pulled it from her pocket.
She held it up.
Eli saw it through the glass.
His breathing looked faster.
Rachel started crying.
“Please.”
Donna’s smile returned.
“Now you understand leverage.”
Thomas moved.
Steven hit him across the face with the gun.
Rachel screamed.
Thomas fell to one knee.
Blood ran from his lip.
Donna looked down at her brother.
“You always chose the wrong woman.”
Thomas slowly stood.
“No.”
He wiped the blood away.
“I chose the wrong sister.”
Donna’s expression cracked.
Then the warehouse lights went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
A gunshot exploded.
Rachel screamed.
The body camera spun.
Someone shouted.
Glass shattered.
Emergency lights flashed red.
And through the chaos, a man’s voice rang out.
“Rachel! Get Eli!”
The camera caught his face for one second.
Gray hair.
Scar on his chin.
The man from the diner.
Robert.
Rachel’s father.
He slammed Steven against the railing.
The gun fell.
Thomas kicked it away.
Rachel ran toward the glass office.
Donna grabbed her from behind.
They crashed into a table.
The locket flew from Rachel’s hand.
Eli screamed, “Mom!”
Thomas tackled Donna.
Rachel broke free.
She reached the office.
Locked.
“Eli!”
He crawled toward the door.
His breathing was terrible.
Rachel hit the glass.
“Baby, move back!”
Robert appeared beside her with a metal bar.
Together they smashed the panel.
Rachel climbed through.
She reached Eli.
Held him.
“Mom.”
“I’m here.”
He gasped.
“Can’t breathe.”
Behind them, Donna crawled across the floor.
Her hand closed around Steven’s fallen gun.
Thomas saw her.
“Donna!”
She raised it.
Not at Thomas.
At Rachel.
Then another person stepped from the dark.
Margaret.
Rachel’s mother.
Alive.
Donna’s eyes widened.
Margaret said one sentence.
“You already stole enough from my daughter.”
Then she struck Donna’s wrist with a fire extinguisher.
The gun clattered away.
Police broke through the warehouse doors.
Officers flooded inside.
Donna screamed.
Steven surrendered.
Marisol dropped to her knees.
Luis ran in despite Hale shouting at him.
He saw his daughter.
She saw him.
“Papa.”
Luis stopped.
Pain covered his face.
“Why?”
Marisol sobbed.
“They said they’d kill you.”
Donna shouted from the floor.
“She’s lying!”
Marisol pointed at Donna.
“She threatened me for years!”
Hale cuffed Donna.
“You can explain downtown.”
Rachel barely noticed.
She held Eli while a paramedic used his inhaler.
His breathing slowly eased.
Thomas knelt beside them.
Eli looked up.
“Dad?”
Thomas froze.
One word.
The first time.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Thomas began to cry.
“Yes.”
Eli reached for him.
Thomas took his hand.
Then Rachel looked across the warehouse.
Margaret stood beside Robert.
Her mother.
Her father.
Both alive.
Both staring at her like they had waited decades for this moment.
Rachel slowly stood.
Her face hardened.
“You have a lot to explain.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Robert looked at the police.
“We do.”
Then he added quietly,
“But first you need to know Donna wasn’t in charge.”
Thomas looked toward his handcuffed sister.
Donna stopped struggling.
Robert’s eyes moved to Steven.
Then Marisol.
May you like
Then Hale.
“The person in charge is still free.”
