Chapter 1

I was eight months pregnant with the miracle baby doctors once said I might never carry when my husband, Adrian Blackwood, walked into my baby shower with his twenty-two-year-old mistress, Lila Monroe, clinging to his arm.
The room was filled with silver balloons, vanilla cupcakes, and wealthy guests who had spent the afternoon congratulating me. Then Adrian’s mother, Vivienne, raised her glass and introduced Lila as the woman who would finally give the Blackwood family “what it deserved.”
Lila placed a hand over her stomach.
My marriage had not simply ended. Adrian and his family had planned to humiliate me in front of everyone.
I ordered them to leave. Instead, Adrian crossed the room and struck me in the stomach. I crashed into the gift table as boxes, ribbons, and cupcakes scattered across the floor.
Nobody helped me.
I curled around my belly, terrified that I had lost my child. After several agonizing seconds, I felt one small kick beneath my palm.
Adrian blamed me for embarrassing him. His father, Conrad, called me emotional. Then Vivienne and Conrad actually applauded while Adrian declared that Lila was carrying the “real Blackwood heir.”
They expected me to cry.
Instead, I smiled.
For fourteen months, Adrian and Conrad had discussed shell companies, fake invoices, offshore transfers, and stolen charity funds around me as though I were furniture. They never knew I had copied the records and secretly helped federal investigators verify their crimes.
The FBI raid was scheduled for exactly 2:00 p.m.
My watch had shattered when I fell, freezing at 1:59, but the wall clock kept moving.
When Conrad realized what I had done, the color drained from his face. Adrian demanded answers, but I only looked at the clock and whispered, “You should have checked who you married.”
At two o’clock, federal agents stormed the estate. Conrad tried to escape, Vivienne dropped her glass, and Lila abandoned Adrian’s side. Paramedics rushed toward me while agents surrounded the Blackwood family.
I thought their empire had finally fallen.
Then Agent Rebecca Sloan showed me a document.
Three days earlier, twelve million dollars had been transferred through an offshore account opened under my legal name, using my identification, electronic signature, and confidential fertility records.
Someone knew I was working with the FBI.

Someone had prepared to frame me for everything.
Across the room, Adrian looked directly at me and smiled.
